Fossil Free: Microbe Helps Convert Solar Power to Liquid Fuel

A new "bioreactor" could store electricity as liquid fuel with the help of a genetically engineered microbe and copious carbon dioxide. The idea?dubbed "electrofuels" by a federal agency funding the research?could offer electricity storage that would have the energy density of fuels such as gasoline. If it works, the hybrid bioelectric system would also offer a more efficient way of turning sunlight to fuel than growing plants and converting them into biofuel.

"The method provides a way to store electrical energy in a form that can be readily used as a transportation fuel," chemical engineer James Liao of the University of California, Los Angeles, explains. Liao and his colleagues report on their "integrated electro-microbial bioreactor" in Science on March 30.

To convert electricity into liquid fuel, Liao and his colleagues focused on Ralstonia eutropha, a soil microbe that can use hydrogen as an energy source to build CO2 into more microbial growth. Already, the microbe's biological machinery is being harnessed for industrial purposes?for example, to churn out plastic instead of proteins. By tweaking the industrial microorganism's genetics, the team now has coaxed it to churn out various butanols?a liquid fuel. "If one speaks with combustion engineers, then they will tell you that the simplest real fuel is butanol," says chemist Andrew Bocarsly of Princeton University, who is not involved in the electrofuel project.

Liao's bioreactor gets its electricity from a solar panel. The current flows into an electrode in the bioreactor, which is full of water, CO2 and R. eutropha. The electricity starts a chemical reaction that uses the CO2 to make formate?carbon dioxide with a hydrogen atom attached, which is an ion (electrically charged) that substitutes for insoluble hydrogen as an energy source for the microbe. The genetically engineered R. eutropha then consumes the formate, yielding butanols, plus more CO2 as a waste product?the latter of which is recycled back through the biochemical process.

R. eutropha doesn't particularly like to be shocked, however, so Liao's team built a "porous ceramic cup" to shield the microbe from the electrical current. Powered by its photovoltaic panel, the bioreactor produced 140 milligrams per liter of butanol fuel over 80 hours, although it then stopped working. "In principle, we can use the same approach to produce other kinds of fuels or chemicals," Liao says.

The approach combines the appeal of energy-dense liquid fuels?packing 50-times or more the energy per kilogram of even the best batteries?with the potential to produce more fuel in a limited area than plants. Photosynthesis achieves the same thing, absorbing sunlight and storing its energy in the bonds of carbohydrate molecules?otherwise known as food and, nowadays, fuel. But photosynthesis is inefficient. For example, corn converted to ethanol captures less than 0.2 percent of the original energy in the sunlight as fuel. A photovoltaic cell can convert 15 percent of incoming photons into electricity, but such solar electricity is hard to store. Using solar power in an electrofuel bioreactor such as Liao's could theoretically convert as much as 9 percent of the incoming sunlight into the final and storable fuel. "By combining a man-made device, which has a great potential for improvement, with biological CO2 fixation, we get the best of both worlds," Liao argues, although that kind of efficiency has yet to be demonstrated. Even this demonstration process turns more sunlight into liquid fuel, however, than biofuels such as corn ethanol or even photosynthetic microbes genetically altered to make butanols. Plus, Liao adds, "it is possible to increase the productivity much higher, since Ralstonia is an industrial microorganism."

Alaska deal aims to develop Point Thomson gas

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell said Friday that the state has reached a settlement in the long-running dispute over leases to develop the Point Thomson gas fields, clearing the way for progress on a major pipeline project.

Parnell had set a Saturday deadline for the major players on Alaska's North Slope to coalesce behind plans for a liquefied natural gas pipeline to get the region's resources to market.

He confirmed that a settlement was reached with companies including BP, Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips, which agreed to align with TransCanada Corp. so work toward a pipeline would be coordinated.

"Ending litigation and reaching alignment are important first steps," Parnell said, but he said additional work remains toward advancing the plans.

Exxon Mobil Corp., BP PLC and ConocoPhillips said they agreed on a plan to focus on a large-scale liquefied natural gas project, capable of overseas exports, as an alternative to a pipeline through Alberta, Canada, that would serve North America. This option could also align more closely with an effort to meet in-state gas needs, they said.

"This agreement does not guarantee a major gas line for Alaska, but it certainly moves us a significant step closer," said state Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan.

Parnell set expectations for progress on a major gas line in his State of the State address in January. The first step was to have resolution on the disputed leases at the Point Thomson gas fields by Feb. 8, the date the Alaska Supreme Court was to hear arguments in the long-running case.

The dispute erupted when the state began pulling leases it believes energy companies held for too long without developing. The Thomson Point leases are seen as critical to the fortunes of a gas pipeline, long-sought by Alaskans as a way to shore up revenues amid declining oil production, create jobs, and provide a reliable source of energy.

Parnell's second demand was to have Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips align under an "Alaska Gasline Inducement Act framework" by the end of the first quarter. Such alignment was to include work on a large liquefied natural gas line through Alaska to tidewater that would allow for overseas exports.

Parnell said he expected the companies to have firmer numbers on a liquefied natural gas project by the end of September, and to identify a specific project and work schedule.

Completion of the first task ? resolution on the Point Thomson leases ? didn't come until this week. The settlement, which also includes Chevron Corp. and Leede Operating Co., mandates development plans.

Point Thomson, located 60 miles east of Prudhoe Bay, is Alaska's largest undeveloped oil and gas field, holding an estimated 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and hundreds of millions of barrels of oil and gas liquids, Parnell's office said.

The inducement act was passed under former Gov. Sarah Palin as a way to jumpstart a pipeline. TransCanada holds an exclusive license to advance a line under terms of the act and has been working with Exxon Mobil.

BP and ConocoPhillips, which balked at terms of the inducement act, pursued a rival project to the Lower 48, but that folded last year when it couldn't garner the commitments needed to move forward.

So far, TransCanada, too, has focused its efforts on a line that would serve North America markets. But changes over the last several years, including the rise of shale gas, have led to concerns that there will be little demand for Alaska gas in the continental U.S.

In October, Parnell called on Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips to unite behind a project that allows for liquefied natural gas exports to the Pacific Rim if the gas market has truly shifted from the Lower 48. In January, he met with the companies' executives to discuss ways to advance a line.

Parnell said Friday that Alaskans should not miss the "historic significance" of the oil company CEOs coming together.

In a letter to Parnell, the CEOs of Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips and BP said they are looking at what it will take for a liquefied natural gas project ? and to get gas off the North Slope to market ? including a timeline and an assessment of major project elements, including global liquefied natural gas trends.

The CEOs said getting gas to market won't be easy, noting, among other things, that "unprecedented commitments of capital" for gas development by the companies will first require "competitive and stable fiscal terms" ? meaning terms on taxes ? from the state.

Parnell has said that if all the milestones he set out for a project are accomplished, the Legislature can take up the issue of gas taxes next year.

Cost of health insurance will surpass income by 2033 | SmartPlanet

Everyone who thinks healthcare is cheaper in Europe is looking at old data the Obama administration threw out to the public during the healthcare bill fight.

It was an old 2000 study by the World Health Organization that declared all of Europe provided healthcare at a lower cost per person than the US. The sad part is they were wrong and later quietly admitted it.

The original study in 2000 was flawed in that it only looked at premiums paid in Europe. They left out co-pays, deductibles and more importantly TAXES. All of which somehow made it into their US numbers. In 2003 they came out with a revised study based on a larger data set that included ALL SOURSES of money that paid for European healthcare.

Once those factors were added in the US was the cheapest per person cost for healthcare among western nations. Italy was still one of the best in Europe.

After reading the final report I have to admit to liking the Italian operating and funding model. Healthcare operations and costs are managed at the regional level.

Healthcare taxes, done as a property tax, vary from region to region based on how effective the regional management is at managing costs. The regional healthcare management head is an elected position not a bureaucrat, so quality and cost effective service, good care and low taxes, are what gets them reelected.

It would be comparable to our states managing it in the US with an elected official in charge of the State Health Department.

Who would have guessed Italy would model something after the method preferred by our founding fathers. Let states manage their own systems. Get the feds out of our lives.

Pink Slime, Deconstructed

?I don?t eat school lunch anyway . . . It looks weird.?

LFTB production; blaze.com

LFTB production; blaze.com

This is from a high school student, quoted in the New York Times over the weekend, in response to a seemingly ?beefless? future in school cafeterias. Most of the recent media outcry surrounds ?pink slime,? the low-fat filler used to bulk up many processed meats. Coverage focuses on schools, where parents and administrators alike worry about students? exposure to ?chemically-treated? foodstuffs and poorly-labeled processed meat.

The low-cost, nutritious school lunch has long been an American institution. Smaller school budgets and larger student populations have led to schools cutting costs wherever possible. When industrial beef producers suggested a newer, cheaper?meat alternative back in the early ?90s, cash-strapped school districts happily agreed.

In 2010, Michael Moss of the New York Times won a Pulitzer for reports probing the processing end of the beef industry. He was among the first to explore the sterilization process, microbial testing, and potential contamination recalls over the past decade. Today, more journalists, along with celebrity chefs, moms, and school officials have all taken up torches and pitchforks against ?pink slime?. Online articles address a myriad of questions: Where does this product come from, and where does it end up? Is it OK to eat? Why aren?t all the ingredients labeled? How is it made, anyway?

But thus far, no one has really satiated my curiosity?what, exactly, is ?pink slime??

What Pink Slime Is, and What It?s Not

Let?s address the name ? there?s undeniably an ??ick factor??ever heard anyone use [slime] in a positive way?? (Borrowing a pithy phrase from Deborah Blum, who covered the subject for Discover Blogs)

Well, if you come from the meat producers? camp, you instead refer to ?slime? as lean, finely-textured beef, or LFTB.?Connective tissue, trimmings, and scraps from industrial butcher plants are mixed in a large steel reactor, where technicians heat the mixture to 100 oF, initiating tissue lysis ? fats and oils begin to rise up, while thicker bits like protein sink. After a spin on the centrifuge to separate these components, lean, squishy pink goo emerges. Ammonium hydroxide ? ammonia dissolved partially in water ? sterilizes the resulting mass against microbes such as?E. coli or Salmonella. (Side Note: a similar product, finely textured beef, uses citric acid in place of ammonia to eliminate pathogens). Once extruded, the ?slime? can be blended into hamburger, hot dogs, and other products, or frozen into pellets for shipping and storage.

But, is it nutritious? Consumers can certainly make valid arguments regarding LFTB?s content: there?s less overall ?functional? protein than that found in other meat products. An analysis conducted at Iowa State University (A.S. Leaflet R1361) found two-and-a-half times more insoluble protein (77% vs. 30%) relative to soluble proteins in ordinary ground chuck. Nutritionally, our gut bacteria digest much of what we cannot, but there?s a good bet that we can?t get as much value from insoluble proteins (collagen and elastin, found largely in tendons, ligaments, and cartilage) as from their soluble siblings (myosin and actin, usually associated with muscle tissues). While these proteins may be hard to digest, on the plus side, there?s less fat in LFTB (~5%) than standard ground chuck (15-20%).

For those revolted by these contents, or even the thought of anything referred to as ?slime? crossing their plates, I have two comments: first, consider Jell-O. The packaging only lists a single ingredient, which reads: gelatin. If you were to tell a child that ?gummy worms? and other wobbly treats were made from steamed animal bones, would they really want dessert?

Second, consider checking the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), the U.S. Gov?t standards used to coordinate aspects of daily life ranging from taxes to farming. In 9CFR 301.2, a collection of terms used in the meat packaging industry, we see the following definition for meat:

?The part of the muscle of any cattle, sheep, swine, or goats, which is skeletal or which is found in the tongue, diaphragm, heart, or esophagus, with or without the accompanying or overlying fat, and the portions of bone?skin, sinew, nerve, and blood vessels which normally accompany the muscle tissue, and are not separated from it in the process of dressing.?

Pretty gruesome reading, true, but realize that this explanation covers everything bought at the butcher, so think carefully when considering catch-all meat products like grounds, mush, pastes, or loaves. In this light, ?slime? doesn?t seem half as bad; as a culture, we?ve implicitly agreed that throat, blood, and tendons are already on the menu.

Ammonia and Other Additives

Since we?re checking the CFR, let?s consider all the other approved meat additives we encounter there. Mosey on over to 9CFR 424.21 to find a table, no less than 20 pages in length, of all the allowable additives used in meat processing: tenderizers, emulsifiers, denuders, binders, bleaching agents, and sweeteners, all on display for the discerning diner?s palate. Compared to ?pink slime? seeing only brief ammonia exposure, I?m more inclined to be suspicious of sausage.

Speaking of additives, what about the ammonium hydroxide? As Blum points out, you?ve eaten it before: close molecular cousins ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and ammonium phosphate [(NH4)3PO4] are found in licorice and breads, respectively. Plant proteins like pectins and glutens are commonly treated with ammonia for various food applications. I?m less concerned with the ammonia treatment, but more with just how much ammonia a single batch of LFTB requires to make it ?safe.? Levels high enough to raise the product pH to about 9.00 rid the beef of most virulent microorganisms, but batches tested by the New York Times back in 2009 showed pH levels as low as 7.75. So what, that?s not a huge difference, right? The pH scale tracks logarithmically, so a one unit variance actually corresponds to 10 times less ammonia, which might reduce odor but also increases potential bacterial contamination.

Contrary to some news reports, ammonia is not a ?pink chemical,? it?s colorless. Nor does the level of ammonia in meat even approach that found in floor cleaners. For my money, a more worrisome butcher?s helper comes from an entirely different source ? carbon monoxide, which when applied to beef binds to the myoglobin and causes the tissue to develop the reassuring pink color consumers associate with freshness and quality.

One last safety note ? perhaps the few examples of contamination detected really are outliers. Click here for the 40-page USDA checklist meat producers must complete to assess their sterilization measures. This document addresses all production activities, including testing regimens, sampling size, antiseptic washes, lot documentation, and cross-contamination checks. USDA even establishes a maximum target of 0.2% for lot checking; or a tolerance of 2 per thousand lots produced with positive tests (in 2007, positive tests had crept up too high, and USDA cracked down. Higher numbers of failed tests were also noted in Moss?s 2009 Times article). Surprisingly, a chart buried near the middle (p.13) of the checklist indicates that processed beef has a lower overall risk of bacterial contamination relative to standard raw beef.

?That?s the thing?it isn?t freaking labeled.?

Healthy food, healthy kid; USDA

Healthy food, healthy kid; USDA

Microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein, a meat industry critic and the man whose 2002 email inadvertently coined the term ?pink slime,? delivered this rebuttal in a Reuters interview this past weekend. Under current regulations, LFTB does not have to be disclosed separately on labels, with the caveat that USDA allows a 15% maximum of the stuff in any product. However, a generation of parents accustomed to fighting high-fructose corn syrup and artificial dyes argue for inclusion of, at least, ammonia in the final ingredient list. Since manufacturers (and the USDA) consider this a production step, it, too, doesn?t need to be discretely mentioned.

So, besides loose labeling and chemical treatment, what is it about this processed meat that so unnerves customers? Certainly, it doesn?t look like a traditional cut anymore, but then neither does hamburger. The ?slime? moniker doesn?t help matters, nor its public unfamiliarity ? slicing animals into sections has a long history in human culture, but secondary processing of the remains is more recent. Blame cultural context: while steaks, chops, and ribs are on menus everywhere, LFTB is not. Perhaps we haven?t had time to adapt. Yet processed food still fills a necessary societal role ? it?s widely available, inexpensive, and can be fortified with nutrients and vitamins.

But is LFTB really food anymore? I would say yes, in the same way those byproducts from any other organism that we consume are. Surely, most people realize that we set our table every day thanks to the labors of other life forms: honey, from bee regurgitation, yogurt, from bacterial metabolism, and multiple cheeses from calf enzymes (rennets) or via fungal decomposition. Cochineal, a crimson dye still used to color meat products (9CFR, p. 624), comes from the dried, crushed bodies of millions of tiny insects. But, compared to insects and microbes, cows hit closer to home somehow, so we revolt at a meat byproduct we don?t recognize.

So, for my final thoughts: to the beef industry, clearer labeling and heightened public awareness would help to quash some of the squeamishness at LFTB?s inclusion in the food pantheon. And to the schools and parents, well-documented and tested LFTB doesn?t seem to be much more harmful, albeit less nutritious, than the Jell-O we already serve at dessert.

Enjoy your school lunch. Bon app?tit!

Search for missing teen Sierra LaMar intensifies

By Mike Anderson, NBCBayArea.com

Dozens of law enforcement officials are combing an area of Morgan Hill, Calif., Saturday as the search for missing 15-year-old Sierra LaMar continues.

Santa County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza said with deputies from nearby counties called in to help, about 90 personnel and several search dogs were combing a 12-mile radius of the community.

See video, see the original story at NBCBayArea.com

LaMar, a 15-year-old Sobrato High School student,?was last seen the morning of Friday, March 16. She had school that day, but never got on the bus.

The girl has been the subject of a major search over the last week, involving the FBI, helicopters, dogs, roadblocks and divers.

Cardoza said Saturday's search is the biggest mounted since Sierra was reported missing more than a week ago.

The day of LaMar's disappearance, her school's automated attendance system notified her mother, Marlene LaMar, that her daughter didn't show up for classes.

The next day, searchers found her cell phone along the side of the road near Palm and Dougherty Avenue, near her home in unincorporated Morgan Hill.

"The cellphone was intact, it wasn't broken," Sgt. Jose Cardoza said. "There's no evidence to lead to a crime after that."

Then on the Sunday after LaMar's disappearance, searchers found her black and pink Juicy brand purse near the intersection of Laguna and Santa Teresa in Morgan Hill, about two miles from her home, Cardoza said.

Inside the purse was a pair of pants, a shirt, a bra and a pair of underwear. The clothing was neatly folded inside the purse.

Steve LaMar, the girl's father, is a registered sex offender. But the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office said he was not a suspect in her disappearence.

"I understand the stigma associated with this in my background, and I assure everyone it is not connected in any way to my daughter?s disappearance," he said. "I ask that you please not shift the focus away from the investigation and from finding Sierra."

Hundreds of people in the communities of Morgan Hill and Fremont gathered Friday night for a candlelight vigil for LaMar.

Since the weekend LaMar went missing, the search team has been looking for clues that might point to a crime. But investigators have found no signs of foul play and no indication she ran away.

Police conducted consent searches of neighbors' homes and a three-mile search radius was set up around LaMar's home, police said. Neighbors have been cooperative.

The FBI eventually joined local authorities in the search. A roadblock was set up on Dougherty Avenue near the intersection of Palm Avenue. Agents stopped every driver to ask questions about LaMar's disappearance.

"I'm hoping that you know, you think of her as your own child," Marlene LaMar said. "You know, she's, she was such a lovable young lady."

Anyone with information about Sierra or her whereabouts is asked to contact Santa Clara County Communications at (408) 299-2311. During business hours, tipsters can call sheriff's investigators at (408) 808-4500 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 808-4431. They also set up an email address for tips at: tips@sheriff.sccgov.org.

Court weighs making health coverage a fact of life

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Death, taxes and now health insurance? Having a medical plan or else paying a fine is about to become another certainty of American life, unless the Supreme Court says no.

People are split over the wisdom of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, but they are nearly united against its requirement that everybody have insurance. The mandate is intensely unpopular even though more than 8 in 10 people in the United States already are covered by workplace plans or government programs such as Medicare. When the insurance obligation kicks in, not even two years from now, most people won't need to worry or buy anything new.

Nonetheless, Americans don't like being told how to spend their money, not even if it would help solve the problem of the nation's more than 50 million uninsured.

Can the government really tell us what to buy?

Federal judges have come down on both sides of the question, leaving it to the Supreme Court to sort out. The justices are allotting an unusually long period, six hours over three days, beginning March 26, to hear arguments challenging the law's constitutionality.

Their ruling, expected in June, is shaping up as a historic moment in the century-long quest by reformers to provide affordable health care for all.

Many critics and supporters alike see the insurance requirement as the linchpin of Obama's health care law: Take away the mandate and the wheels fall off.

Politically it was a wobbly construction from the start. It seems half of Washington has flip-flopped over mandating insurance.

One critic dismissed the idea this way: "If things were that easy, I could mandate everybody to buy a house and that would solve the problem of homelessness." That was Obama as a presidential candidate, who was against health insurance mandates before he was for them.

Once elected, Obama decided a mandate could work as part of a plan that helps keep premiums down and assists those who can't afford them.

To hear Republicans rail against this attack on personal freedom, you'd never know the idea came from them.

Its model was a Massachusetts law signed in 2006 by Mitt Romney, now the front-runner of the Republican presidential race, when he was governor. Another GOP hopeful, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, supported a mandate on individuals as an alternative to President Bill Clinton's health care proposal, which put the burden on employers.

All four GOP presidential candidates now promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which they call "Obamacare." Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum calls it "the death knell for freedom."

So much for compromise.

Obama and congressional Democrats pushed the mandate through in 2010, without Republican support, in hopes of creating a fair system that ensures everyone, rich or poor, young or old, can get the health care they need. Other economically advanced countries have done it.

Doing nothing is more expensive than most people realize.

Congress found that when the uninsured go to clinics and emergency rooms, the care they can't pay for costs nearly $75 billion a year. Much of that cost is passed along and ends up adding $1,000 a year to the average family's insurance premium.

The overhaul is neither the liberal dream of a single government program supported by taxes and covering everyone nor the conservative vision of stripping away federal rules and putting free enterprise in charge.

The Obama plan relies on private companies plus lots of regulation to make sure they provide basic benefits, keep premiums reasonable, and cover the sick as well as the healthy. That's where the mandate comes in. If insurers must cover everyone, even those with existing medical conditions, healthy people have little incentive to sign up before they get sick.

Insurance companies argue that if only the sick sign up, insurers will go broke. So the law says everybody must have insurance for themselves and their children, or pay a penalty.

Also, because everyone needs health care sometime, if everyone purchases insurance, the price per person can be lower, with the cost of care spread out over many people.

After all, the government requires workers to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes, whether they want the benefits or not.

One argument for the insurance mandate is that the fines are just federal taxes by another name. Another is that it falls under the government's constitutional power to regulate commerce that crosses state borders.

State governments, of course, tell people to buy lots of things, including auto insurance or motorcycle helmets.

"You can always move to another state," said Tom O'Connor, a consultant in Fairfax, Va., who thinks the health care law overreaches. "It's a little more difficult to move to another country."

Many agree.

In an Associated Press-GfK poll, 85 percent said the U.S. government should not have the power to require people to buy health insurance. When the question is worded without the specific reference to federal power, acceptance of the mandate grows a bit, but 6 in 10 are still against it.

Even among those who generally support the health care overhaul, one-third said they are against the insurance mandate.

There's also a significant minority who sees mandates as a cop-out and prefer a government program that covers everyone, Medicare for all.

It's clear that many people do not understand what the law would do or how it would affect them.

Jan Gonzales, an out-of-work bookkeeper in Pablo, Mont., calls fining people for going without insurance "the most ridiculous, asinine thing you ever heard of."

"If I can't put food on the table for my children, how can I pay for health care coverage?" asks Gonzales, who's been without insurance for seven years. "What moron came up with that idea?"

Of course, she might qualify for the law's exemptions for those too poor to pay and for assistance for low-income people, as well as many in the middle class.

There also are some religious exemptions. .

Estimates vary widely of how many uninsured people will get insurance once it's required in January 2014.

About 4 million people would pay a penalty to the Internal Revenue Service for being uninsured in 2016, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

By 2016, the fine reaches $695 per uninsured adult or 2.5 percent of family income, up to $12,500 per year. The IRS is in charge of the penalties but can't prosecute violators or place liens against them. Its only enforcement option may be withholding money from refunds.

That leaves insurance companies, who stand to gain lots of new customers, worried that people instead will shrug off the weak mandate.

Meanwhile, the state-federal Medicaid program will expand to cover more low-income people, and that's another issue before the Supreme Court, because many states say they cannot afford the extra cost.

(AP) ? A submarine that will take "Titanic" director James Cameron to the Earth's deepest point has made a successful unmanned test dive.

Cameron tells National Geographic News that his specially designed submarine called Deepsea Challenger completed the nearly 7-mile test dive Wednesday. The team returned to calmer waters and was headed back to the site Saturday.

If all goes well, he'll spend about six hours exploring and filming the bottom of the Mariana Trench, about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh are the only other men to reach the spot. They spent about 20 minutes there during their 1960 dive but couldn't see much after their sub kicked up sand from the sea floor.

4 Common Mistakes Parents Make When Choosing Preschool ...

There are often times when parents are faced with difficult decisions to make and sometimes they don?t always make the wisest one the first time around.? There are a few common mistakes that parents will make time and time again when it comes to choosing the right preschool classes for their child to attend.? Some of the mistakes to avoid include:

1. ?Letting your child pick the class that they want to attend.? Children have no idea what they want when it comes to picking a preschool class and they will often just jump on the first opportunity that sounds exciting.? You need to be the one to make the educated decision and implement the proper authority to make sure that your child is engaging in a healthy and appropriate activity.? Choose a program based on your little ones needs and where they are in life at this point in time.

2.

?Don?t just choose a class because it has the academic abilities to make your child excel.? The class also needs to offer social skills and activities that stimulate their minds to allow them to be as imaginative and creative as possible.? This will help them to foster their independence and learn how to follow directions and play well with others. ?

3. ?Selecting a class from nothing more than what the word on the street is may not always be the most beneficial for you.? What one parent may term as the perfect school may in fact be the worst choice for your child and vice versa.? You need to look at how well the school is going to work for your individual child and their needs and then make an informed decision.

4. ?Jumping into a program because it is the only one available will only prove more of a hurdle than looking for other options.? Take the time to investigate all of the possible outcomes and not just jump into the first one that sounds as if it might be a good opportunity.? Often times the first choice is not always the best choice.

10 Reasons To Get Help For Abusive Relationships | Domestic ...

young woman in a conversation with a psychologist

Abusive relationships can be very hard on people. It is quite easy to feel helpless and simply submit to the cycle of abuse.

There are hotlines and support groups which offer aid to victims of abusive relationships and it?s important to get help as soon as possible.

Please find below 10 reasons to get help in abusive relationships.

  • You could end up in the hospital: There is always a fear involved in ending up in the hospital, especially knowing your partner caused it. Eventually something could?push your partner so far over the edge that passion will give way to the moment and you end up hurt or possibly even dead.
  • Your self esteem suffers: It does not take long if you are being emotionally abused before you start to develop a feeling of worthlessness and low self esteem. Every person is of worth and you do not deserve to be treated like you have nothing to offer.
  • Your children could be taken from you: All it would take is a complaint from a neighbour or person at the school. If your children show signs of physical harm, or are observed with your partner out in public being emotionally abused, there could be repercussions which could lead to your children being? taken away.
  • There is financial support that can get you on your feet: Many feel trapped by finances. There are a few government programs which provide temporary loans and even legal services to make sure that you get money to support yourself and your children after being in an abusive relationship.
  • There are places to stay: If you need a place to stay there are?a few ?houses for victims of domestic abuse. Alternately you could look to?family and?friends for support and a place to stay. Simply removing yourself from the situation is a great first step.
  • You could be impacting your children?s future: Growing up in a household whereby the two authority figures are constantly fighting or being?abusive, is not a good place for children to be in. There could be psychological ramifications on your child?s future which may prevent them from succeeding in life as a result of their upbringing.
  • You are stopping yourself from being in a healthy relationship: Imagine being in a healthy nurturing relationship with a partner who is completely supportive and non abusive. Every moment you spend in an abusive relationship is time that you are denying yourself the healthy relationship you deserve.
  • Religion is becoming more supportive: Divorce and separation has become quite commonplace now. Where many traditional religious ideals would excommunicate or show disfavour to the dissolving of a relationship or marriage, today religion offers many programs to aid victims of abusive relationships and supports your decisions.

The Mockingjay Problem

But if the first Hunger Games book introduces some awkward elements for a teen-friendly, mainstream movie, the third in the series, called Mockingjay, will force filmmakers to turn massacre and despair into blockbuster entertainment. In the finale to the series [spoiler alert], the children aren't sent to their death in an arena, but they are lured to their deaths with booby-trapped toys that detonate in their tiny, waiting fingers. To make matters worse, the trilogy's teenage heroine, Katniss Everdeen, is caught in the blast. She wakes to find most of her body covered in burns, in a pain-medicated fog that barely holds the agony at bay. Our heroine spends the last act of the book in a drugged, self-loathing stupor, and the tidy, dramatic structure of the first two novels?a teenage love triangle, the pre-games hype and preparations, the games themselves?is made over into a bleak story of urban warfare. For good or bad, it's a jarring transition. Imagine the Twilight series ending with all of the werewolves committing ritual suicide, or Harry Potter landing in a concentration camp for young wizards.

Japan shares space station SMILES via atmospheric data distribution

ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2012) ? Did you panic when you heard in recent news that two massive solar flares from the Sun were hitting Earth's atmosphere? The coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, typically produced by solar flares might pose a danger, if not for Earth's protective atmosphere and magnetosphere. Using International Space Station research and technology, scientists continue to learn more about the atmosphere, adding important new data to the collective understanding of this important defensive veil.

Atmospheric gasses, held in place by gravity, surround our planet and keep us safe from extreme temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, and the vacuum of space. Meanwhile, the magnetic fields generated by and surrounding Earth -- the magnetosphere -- help to shield us from the ever-present, solar wind-increased radiation events resulting from CMEs.

The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, developed a high-precision technology that resides outside the station, mounted on the Japanese Experiment Module-Exposed Facility, or JEM-EF, as part of an investigation to study the chemical makeup of Earth's middle atmosphere. Known as the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder, or SMILES (http://smiles.tksc.jaxa.jp/), this hardware uses a superconducting detector cooled down to 4 Kelvins (-269 degrees Celsius) and is the first of its kind in space

A cooperation between JAXA and the Japanese National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, or NICT, made the development of SMILES possible. Their combined objective was to use this space station technology to demonstrate highly sensitive submillimeter-wave "the ozone layer."

The ozone layer helps to protect life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, and is destroyed by trace atmospheric constituents such as chlorine and bromine that can be produced from human-made refrigerants, solvents, and other compounds. The data collected by SMILES improves our understanding of how these trace atmospheric constituents impact the ozone layer.

A select set of research groups received observation data from SMILES, unique for its high sensitivity detection of atmospheric chemistry. The use of this data can help scientists find answers to questions of climate change, including ozone and global warming research. While SMILES is no longer collecting data, the hardware continues to run as a technology test on orbit.

A recent press release from JAXA announced that the confirmed high-precision data from this study, compiled during a 6 month period ending in April 2010, is now available for release to the public. The SMILES data includes 11 types of atmospheric minor elements, such as chlorine compounds and ozone. This knowledge helps to expand scientific understanding of the atmosphere's chemical makeup, specifically in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? McLaren driver Jenson Button won the Formula One season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, taking the checkered flag Down Under for the third time in four years.

Button beat reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull by 2.1 seconds after the race turned into a 17-lap shootout after Vitaly Petrov stopped on the main straight, bringing out the safety car.

Pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton of McLaren was third, just ahead of local hope Mark Webber of Red Bull.

With a strong performance, McLaren showed it had closed the gap on the Red Bull team which dominated 2011, and set the stage for a more competitive season.

"It was an amazing day," Button said. "Starting the year strong for this team is really important. The past two years for us have been tricky for us coming into the first race. It points us in a great position for the next few races and on the right foot."

Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was fifth, with Williams' Pastor Maldonado crashing hard into a wall on the final lap while on the tail of the Spaniard.

Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi overtook Maldonado for sixth, and teammate Sergio Perez was eighth after starting 22nd, last on the grid. They were separated by Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen.

Toro Rosso's Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo finished ninth, and registered points in his first home race, by overtaking teammate Jean-Eric Vergne on the final sequence of corners. Vergne was shuffled to 11th, with Force India's Paul di Resta taking the last points-paying position in 10th.

Button got off the line better than Hamilton and immediately took the lead, which eventually grew to 11.8 seconds on lap 23 of 58. That lead was negated when Petrov stopped on the main straight.

"The biggest problem was the safety car. As soon as the safety car comes out and its six o'clock in the evening, its difficult to keep temperature in the tires," Button said. "I was a little on edge, but I was able to keep the heat in the tires."

Button mastered the restart, opening a 3.5-second lead on Vettel after just one lap and comfortably holding on for victory.

Vettel leapfrogged Hamilton thanks to a clever piece of Red Bull strategy, holding off on a pit stop as Hamilton went in, and taking over second behind the safety car. The German was tacked onto the back of Button, and it appeared he could pull off a victory that had seemed McLaren's for the taking.

"I thought I would be in a good position to have a shot at Jenson but I didn't," Vettel said. "He was too quick ? two corners and he was gone."

"There was no way we could have stayed with him ? he completely deserved to win today."

A downcast Hamilton saw little to be enthused about with his finish.

"It was a bit of a tough day, but there's plenty more races to do so I just have to keep my head up," he said. "It was still a positive to come here with good pace and hopefully we can take that on to the next race."

Lotus' Romain Grosjean started a surprise third, but was shuffled back quickly after a poor start and by lap three he was gone after breaking his right front axle bumping wheels with Maldonado.

Mercedes' Michael Schumacher was third for the first nine laps but ran wide over the grass at turn one under pressure from Vettel, and soon after retired with a gear problem.

"We've never had an issue with the gearbox all winter long, so it's a bit strange," the seven-time world champion said. "But they're prototype cars, you can never have total reliability."

Freed after 20 years of injustice, he hits the books

By Mary Harris and Colleen Williams, NBCLosAngeles.com

Franky Carrillo walks the campus of Loyola Marymount University. His backpack is filled with books. His days are now filled with freedom.

Carrillo spent 20 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit.

While incarcerated, Carrillo earned his GED, but says he always dreamed of going to college. Now he is a 37-year-old, part-time freshman at LMU, and Friday marks the one-year anniversary of his newfound freedom.

He says he feels embraced by the staff and students: "The community of LMU has been great. It's become a sanctuary for me. It has this element of a wonderland."

But it has been a long and difficult road to this "wonderland."

In 1991, Carrillo was 16 years old and living in Maywood with his father. He ran with a bad crowd, but had never been in any trouble.

"I definitely wasn't an angel but I definitely was not a murderer," he said.

It was early morning, Jan. 24, 1991, when Carrillo says 15 sheriff's deputies with guns drawn stormed through the front door.

"My dad said in Spanish and I said it in English: 'What's going on? Why?' And no one would say anything until eventually someone said, 'You know why.' And that's all they gave us," Carrillo said.

Carrillo says a "gang" of corrupt and racist Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies -- known as the "Lynwood Vikings" -- coerced and threatened key witnesses into identifying him in a photo lineup.

Carrillo was convicted of murder and sentenced to two consecutive life terms.

When Carrillo talks about his time in prison, he uses words like "dehumanizing," "demoralizing" and "isolating." He served his last 10 years at Folsom State Prison, where he says he feared for his safety.

"I was very afraid, but I think being afraid was one of the elements that kind of kept me alive because it put me very, very aware of my surroundings," he said.

Carrillo says he did not know the victim of the murder, and that he was at home watching TV when the drive-by shooting happened. He knew a mistake had been committed; the system had gone astray and sent the "wrong guy" to prison.

Carrillo wanted to prove his innocence. He began a letter-writing campaign, begging lawyers and media outlets to listen to him.

Finally, someone heard him.

Carrillo calls Ellen Eggers an "angel" who "lives justice; it just radiates from her."

Eggers, an attorney, says she was convinced of Carrillo's innocence after meeting him just once, and not just because his earnestness and manners, but more importantly because Carrillo had evidence from the real shooter.

Eggers says he showed her "a six-page, scrawled-out, in-pencil, handwritten series of notes that basically is a confession to the drive-by murder that Frankie was convicted of."

Eggers works as a public defender in Northern California, specializing in death-penalty cases. Because Carrillo was a minor when he was convicted, he was sentenced to consecutive life terms, not the death penalty, and therefore did not fall under Eggers' prevue.

But the more she learned of Carrillo's circumstance, the more Eggers was determined to get him freed.

Eggers took the case pro-bono. She gave up weekends, summers and vacations to prove Carrillo's innocence. She says it was a consuming project.

"The experience of spending that much time with Frankie just bonded me with him so completely. I literally felt that I was locked up with him," she said.

One of Eggers' biggest challenges was that Carrillo's conviction hinged on eyewitnesses.

"There was no DNA in Franky's case. There wasn't even a gun. I mean, it was all just eye-witness testimony," Eggers said.

Eggers was advised that in order for Carrillo to have any chance of getting his conviction overturned, all of the witnesses would have to recant their testimony.

This was a daunting task.

She says the detailed hand-written notes that Carrillo had shown her were critical in getting the witnesses to realize that "a mistake had been made."

Ultimately every witness recanted their testimony.

During one moving and surreal moment in court, a key witness apologized to Carrillo, and Carrillo forgave him, said Eggers.

When witnesses change their original testimony, it is often met with skepticism -- which is why Eggers implored the judge see the exact spot where the teens claimed to be able to see Carrillo as the shooter.

"It is absolutely essential that you see for yourself, so you don't have to know whether the witnesses told the truth back then or they are telling the truth now. You need to see with your own eyes," Eggers told the judge.

The legal teams and the judge visited the crime scene on a night when the moon was similar to the night of the crime. Then they reenacted the drive-by shooting.

This field trip proved invaluable.

Eggers says it proved to the judge that there was "no way, physically possible that anyone standing on the curb could have identified anyone inside that car that was driving by."

On March 14, 2011, the District Attorney's office conceded the case and two days later, Carrillo walked out of prison.

His conviction was overturned. He was free.

Although part-time now, Carrillo has been accepted as a full-time LMU student for the fall of 2012.

LMU President David Burcham says when he first met Carrillo, he was impressed with his "dignity" and that the school felt an "obligation to assist."

"As you know, when a prosecution is brought against an individual in this state, it's brought on behalf of the people of the state of California. We thought that when a mistake is made, that the people of California have an obligation to try to help," Burcham said.

Carrillo is now busy building a full and meaningful future for himself. In addition to being a student, he is politically active and lobbies against the death penalty. He lectures on campus and at juvenile halls about his experiences. He volunteers at an orphanage in Tijuana.

His work at the orphanage clearly moves him. He refers to it as "a jail of little kids that had been forgotten about."

Carrillo tears up when he talks about the connection he feels when he holds a small child.

"It takes me back to a time in prison, where I myself was deprived from human emotion -- being deprived from just being human," Carrillo said.

Despite experiences that few people can imagine, Carrillo says he believes in justice and forgiveness, and hopes to help others in any way he can.

While he was in prison, Carrillo missed out on a lot. His son was born. His father died. He says it hurts him to think that his father did not live to see him free.

Carrillo lost 20 years -- good years, the years when most people go to college and find love and build careers.

Meeting him in person, it is hard not to notice how good natured he is. Polite. Hopeful.

He says although many people would understand if he were angry and bitter, he just can't be.

"I'm not bitter. It defeats the purpose of wanting to be free. I could not imagine my life now as a free man having a frown on my face."
