One Asiana victim killed by a vehicle, not plane crash: coroner

By Gerry Shih

SAN MATEO, California (Reuters) - A teenage passenger on the Asiana Airlines plane that crashed in San Francisco died from injuries sustained after being run over by a motor vehicle, most likely a fire truck at the scene, officials said on Friday.

Ye Mengyuan, a 16-year-old girl who sat toward the rear of Flight 214, survived the Boeing 777's crash-landing but died from blunt force injuries consistent with being run over by an emergency response vehicle, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault and San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said at a news conference.

"Obviously this is very difficult news for us," Hayes-White said. "We're heart-broken. We're in the business of saving lives."

Ye was one of three Chinese girls who died in the July 6 crash. More than half of the 307 people onboard the flight from Seoul were injured in the crash.

Hayes-White said Ye was struck by at least one specialized fire-fighting vehicle normally deployed at San Francisco International Airport, but left open the possibility that she was hit by more than one rig.

The coroner's ruling settled lingering suspicions that emergency personnel racing to douse the fiery wreckage may have inadvertently played a role in the death of one the passengers.

The announcement prompted a new set of questions over the circumstances of Ye's death and whether the first responders, who have been generally hailed for an efficient performance, could have done anything to prevent it.

It remains unclear how firefighters failed to notice Ye before she was hit, or what she did in her final minutes amidst the crash wreckage and scenes of chaos.

Fire department officials have said Ye's body was covered by a one-foot-thick (30-cm-thick) blanket of firefighting foam when she was found. Hayes-White said on Friday she did not know whether Ye was covered in the foam at the time when she was struck by the truck.

"There was a lot of debris scattered around. It was a difficult, challenging scene," she said.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTS

San Francisco police, who are still investigating the matter, have interviewed the firefighters operating the rig and given them drug and alcohol tests, Hayes-White told reporters.

The fire chief on Friday stood staunchly by her department and said she did not anticipate any disciplinary action against the firefighters involved in Ye's death, which she labeled a "tragic accident."

"It was a very volatile, dangerous situation," she said, repeatedly commending her department's performance. "In light of that, we will take a look at our protocols and procedures. There is always room for us to evaluate and improve our response."

The Chinese Consulate in San Francisco issued a statement on Friday saying it noted the effort made by U.S. agencies to "look into Mengyuan's death and disclose the truth."

"We urge the involved parties of the U.S. side to deal properly with the aftermath of Mengyuan's death and investigate and affix responsibility for this tragic accident," it said.

The San Francisco Fire Department's exposure to legal liability would be greatly diminished if the police investigation concludes that firefighter negligence did not play a role in Ye's death.

Ye was believed to have been thrown onto the runway along with another passenger when the plane's fuselage clipped the runway, airline officials and crash investigators said last week.

Firefighters racing to the scene sprayed fire-suppressing foam at the wrecked plane, which was leaking fuel and in danger of exploding. A fire that started in the right engine grew as passengers evacuated, and ultimately consumed the flight cabin.

Both the coroner and the fire chief said it also remains unknown how Ye's body ended up near the airplane if she indeed fell out of the airplane where it first struck the runway, far from where the wreckage ultimately came to rest.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said that many lives were saved by the "quick response and heroic decisions" of the city's emergency response personnel.

"This tragic accident is especially hard for them - and all of us - to endure," Lee said in a statement.

Barca coach to step down - reports

iol spt july19 Vilanova

AFP

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is to step down due to ill health, Sport, El Mundo Deportivo and other Spanish media reported.

Madrid - Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is to step down due to ill health, Spanish media reported on Friday, without identifying the source of their information.

Vilanova, 44, has been battling throat cancer for the past couple of years and spent two months having treatment in New York last season.

Barca vice president Javier Faus said he was unable to confirm the reports when contacted by telephone. A Barca spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

Club president Sandro Rosell and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta are due to hold a news conference at 1830 GMT on Friday.

Sport reported that Joan Francesc Ferrer, known as "Rubi", may be in line to take over.

Ferrer led Girona to the second division playoffs last season and was appointed Vilanova's assistant for the coming campaign to help with technical analysis of Barca's rivals.

Vilanova succeeded his close friend Pep Guardiola at the end of the 2011-12 season after Guardiola - now coach of Bayern Munich - decided to take a year out from football.

The pair, who were at Barca's academy together and coached the B side before stepping up to the first team in 2008, led the club on a spectacular four-year run including two Champions League crowns and three La Liga titles.

Last season, Vilanova helped Barca to a fourth La Liga success in five years as they equalled Real Madrid's record points haul from the previous term. ? Reuters

Coroner: Asiana Flight 214 victim killed by fire truck, not plane crash

Chinatopix via AP

Ye Mengyuan poses for photos with other classmates in eastern China's Zhejiang province in an undated photo. Mengyuan was one of three victims of the July 6 crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 in San Francisco.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

One of three teenage victims from Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was killed by a fire truck that responded to the scene ? and not from the impact of the plane crash, officials said Friday.

Ye Mengyuan, 16, survived the horrific landing and was alive when at least one specialized rig struck her on the runway at San Francisco International Airport, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said.

"Obviously, we are heartbroken. We're in the business of saving lives," said San Francisco Fire chief Joanne Hayes-White, apologizing for what she called "a tragic accident."

"It's difficult and very devastating news for all of us."

Mengyuan?s classmate and travel companion, identified by the Korean-based airline as 16-year-old Wang Linjia, was also killed in the July 6 crash. A third girl, a 15-year-old, died of her critical injuries six days later.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault says, the cause of Ye Mengyan's death was "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle."

The victims?were reportedly traveling in a group of 34 Chinese high school students and a teacher on their way to summer camp in California.

Another?180 people were injured, including two flight attendants who were ejected from a gaping hole at the back of the plane onto the runway.

Federal investigators believe the Boeing 777 came in too slow and too low and clipped the seawall on the runway as it landed. After its tail was ripped off, it spun around and eventually burst into flames.

Emergency crews sped to the runway to douse the jet in white foam and rescue passengers. Hayes-White said "every aspect" of the response is under investigation.

She said emergency workers had "risked their lives" to save people from the burning plane. "Many lives were saved on July 6," she said.

"We're really trying to support our members," she added.?"Everyone is very emotional from this incident," she said.

The fire chief said her department has reached out to Mengyuan's family through the Chinese consulate and offered to meet with them.

It's not clear how the teen ended up on the runway or why the truck did not see her. She was on the ground when she was hit by one or two trucks, the coroner said.

An autopsy determined that she died from "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle."

"Our forensic examination revealed that she was still alive when she received those injuries," he said. It's unknown if she suffered any injuries from the actual crash.

Passengers evacuate from an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft after a crash landing in San Francisco.

Although the National Transportation Safety Board will not issue a report on the cause of the crash for months, 83 survivors have taken the first step toward suing the airline and the plane's manufacturer.

Ill. man gets life term for killing family of 5

LINCOLN, Ill. (AP) ? A man convicted of beating five members of his ex-wife's family to death in their small-town Illinois home was sentenced Friday to five consecutive life sentences.

Christopher Harris, 34, was convicted in May after a monthlong trial. Harris admitted killing Dillen Constant, but claimed he did so in self-defense after discovering the 14-year-old boy slaughtering his own family. Harris reiterated his innocence on Friday when making a brief statement before being sentenced.

"I made a lot of stupid, stupid decisions that night but I did not commit this crime, and that's all I have to say," he said, according to the Peoria Journal Star, which reported that Harris spoke for about one minute.

But Judge Scott Drazewski, who before the sentencing denied Harris' motion for a new trial, not only imposed the five consecutive life sentences, but added a total of 80 years in prison for first-degree murder, armed robbery and home invasion.

Because of the charges, the only sentence that the judge could have imposed was life in prison. But there was drama in the sweltering courtroom.

"I am 7 and it still breaks my heart and I wish you were dead and my brothers and sister and Mommy and Daddy were alive," Tabitha Gee, who was 3 years old when she was beaten and survived the attack, said through a statement that was read in court, according to The (Bloomington) Pantagraph.

Harris' ex-wife, Nicole Gee, stated in a letter that was read in court that she had changed the name of Harris' son, who was born a short time before the killings, and vowed that she would never tell Harris what the boy's name is, according to the Peoria newspaper.

During the trial, Harris' own brother testified against him, describing the sickening sound as Harris pummeled his former mother-in-law and her family with a tire iron.

Ruth and Raymond "Rick" Gee and their three children were killed Sept. 21, 2009, at their home in Beason, 40 miles northeast of Springfield.

Nicole Gee, who was once married to Harris, is Rick Gee's adult daughter. She and Harris had recently reconciled, but broke up again just days before the gruesome deaths.

Harris did not dispute that he and his brother, Jason Harris, drank, smoked marijuana and used cocaine during a long night that ended with the slayings. He testified that the two went to the Gees' home to buy more marijuana.

Harris said when he walked into the house he saw 46-year-old Rick, 39-year-old Ruth and 11-year-old Austin Gee all badly hurt or dead. He said he then fought Dillen.

But Jason Harris testified that he believed they went to the family's home that night because his brother wanted to have sex with Ruth Gee's 16-year-old daughter, Justina Constant.

Jason Harris, now 25, testified that he stayed outside the house but said he heard a woman scream ? like something from "a horror film" ? and thuds like the sound of a bowling ball hitting the floor.

He said he saw his brother hit Dillen with the tire iron and that his sibling admitted he'd killed the rest of the family, saying: "I (messed) up. I killed them all."

Two Distant Spacecraft Set to Take Photos of Earth Friday

In a cosmic coincidence, two NASA spacecraft in orbit around distant planets in the solar system are expected to take photos of Earth tomorrow (July 19).

On Friday, the Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn and the Messenger probe orbiting Mercury will train their cameras on Earth, capturing their unique perspectives on humanity's home in the universe.

Messenger's photos will be taken over the course of two days (July 19 to 20), while Cassini will capture its images during a 15-minute window from 5:27 p.m. to 5:42 p.m. EDT (2127 to 2142 GMT) tomorrow. Cassini mission planners are encouraging Earthlings to "wave at Saturn" during the photo window to take part in the project, even though individual people on Earth will be invisible to the probe's cameras. [See amazing photos taken by Cassini]

"What's important about this particular image is that it's the first time that we've known ahead of time that this picture was going to be taken," Mike Simmons, the founder and president of Astronomers Without Borders said of the Cassini photo. "It's an opportunity to bring awareness of our position in space to everyone, not just show a picture after the fact, but make people aware that there's a spacecraft out there that's doing it, and create an event that people will then want to look up, look at Saturn, learn more about it, and maybe even more importantly be involved in it, be a part of it."

Scientists working with Messenger were inspired by the Cassini team's idea to take a photo of Earth. Coincidentally, they saw that Messenger would have a good view of Earth during planned observations aimed at finding natural satellites around Mercury, NASA officials said.

The Messenger team will take its photos at 7:49 a.m., 8:38 a.m. and 9:41 a.m. EDT (1149, 1238 and 1341 GMT) on both July 19 and July 20.

Cassini and Messenger will each capture different parts of the planet Earth in their images. Messenger will see the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe, while North America and part of the Atlantic Ocean will be in sunlight for Cassini's photo, NASA officials said.

Astronomers Without Borders is calling on photographers of all kinds to send in their photos of Saturn in honor of the Cassini portrait session. Officials with the organization plan on crafting a "zoomable" mosaic image that uses photos of Saturn from Earth to craft a large duplicate of the Cassini picture.

Both photos will take some time to process, but some of the raw images that will be arranged into a cohesive picture from Cassini's photo-snapping session with Earth should be available online as early as July 20.

Chimpanzees and orangutans remember distant past events

[unable to retrieve full-text content]We humans can remember events in our lives that happened years ago, with those memories often surfacing unexpectedly in response to sensory triggers like flavor or scent. Now, researchers have evidence to suggest that chimpanzees and orangutans have similar capacities. In laboratory tests, both primate species were clearly able to recollect a tool-finding event that they had experienced just four times three years earlier and a singular event from two weeks before, the researchers show.

Japan and South Korea scramble Russian aircraft from military exercise

Japan and South Korea scramble Russian aircraft from military exercise

A Russian military exercise involving nuclear bombers caused neighbours Japan and South Korea to scramble as they were found near Hokkaido and the Korean Peninsula on Monday. Japan and Russia reported that both aircrafts were intercepted by three Japanese fighters. The Russian Defense Ministry also said that both bombers were on practice strikes and had been airborne for 7 hours since taking off from Ukrainka Air Base in Amur Oblast.

The aircraft were identified as Tu-95 H bombers which were commissioned as strategic bombers. According to the Russian Defense Ministry the Tu-95 were loaded with ?strategic missiles? as part of the Russian military exercise. The ministry also said that the Tu-95s took off from Ukrainka ?in order to provide strategic deterrence measures over the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk.? Besides being a strategic bomber, a Tu-95 is also used for missile carrying missions and airborne surveillance.

According to Russian Major Gen. Igor Dylevskiy, ?The total number of troops involved in the inspection of the combat readiness is about 160,000 military personnel, more than 5,000 tanks and armored fighting vehicles, 130 long-range, military transport, fighter, bomber and army aviation aircraft, as well as up to 70 Navy ships.? Besides the Tu-95, another aircraft identified as Il-20, a heavily armoured ground attack aircraft, was also spotted over the Russian-controlled Kuril Islands, which are located near Hokkaido and also claimed by Japan.

Russian military exercises involving Raptors and Bears, another name for Tu-95, is not unheard of in the Pacific. Back in February, two Bears were found near Guam while in April the U.S. Air Force? intercepted two Raptors near Alaska. Also in April, two Blinders or Tu-22 were deployed for a simulated missile attack, which defense officials claimed was to target U.S. missile defenses and Japanese military bases.

Israel Taking Directions from China Rather than Obama

17 Jul 2013, 2:42 AM PDT post a comment

The matter raises tensions between the U.S. and Israel because the suit was being pursued in light of "tough U.S. anti-financing laws."

The boy, Daniel Wultz, was killed in 2006. And according to jta.org, Israel was supposed to provide an intelligence official for the case if the Wultzes would but file suit. Subsequently, the Wultzes filed suit only to have Israel pull out at China's insistence.?

Over the weekend U.S. Ambassador Michael Oren was sent to Jerusalem, where he met with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. Oren reportedly told Netanyahu that the Obama administration "is ready to subpoena the intelligence official if [he is not made] available."

AA Arrivals Lounge, London Heathrow

On the way back from the US to Dublin, I knew that there were no showers in the BA UK/Ireland Lounge and so immigrated at Terminal 3, and went to the Arrivals Lounge.

There was no line at the (still) operating IRIS machine at Immigration despite several large aircraft arriving at once. There was a line for UK, the ePassport Gates and the Non-EU passengers.

The Arrivals Lounge is on the second floor, reached by turning right after you leave the Duty Free shop after Customs, catching a lift to the second floor.

On arrival I was met with a helpful member of staff who arranged for me to have a shower room. A collegue showed me where to go, and then they checked that I knew how the room operated.

In the room is a large multi-level shower, basin and toilet.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

After my shower I popped out for a sit, and some breakfast. There are about 40 seats and there was plenty of room despite the lounge being shared with Qantas and Cathay passengers.

There was hot and cold food, a good range of juices, coffee, tea and water.

You can buy your way in to the lounge for US$90.

Stevie Wonder boycotts Fla. post-Zimmerman

Music

Florida fans of Stevie Wonder who want to see the legend sing are going to have to go on a road trip for the near future. During a performance in Quebec City, Canada, on Sunday, the Grammy-winning performer spoke out about the recent acquittal of George Zimmerman and announced he would boycott the state.

"I decided today that until the 'Stand Your Ground' law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again," he told the audience. "As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world."

Though the "stand your ground" law arguably was not a factor in Zimmerman's acquittal, it was a much-discussed potential motivation for Zimmerman's actions on the night of Feb. 26, 2012, when he and Martin had their deadly encounter.

Earlier in his over three-minute announcement, captured by a fan at the concert on YouTube, Wonder asked his fans to join him in the boycott.

"For those that we have lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world ? we can't bring them back," he said. "(What) we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That's what I know we can do."

Wonder isn't the first celebrity to speak out post-verdict; others have given voice to their concerns about the acquittal on Twitter and elsewhere, but his appears to be the first entertainer to actively take his business out of the state in reaction to the decision.

Last November Wonder withdrew from a Los Angeles gala in which he was set to perform in support of the Israeli Defence Forces after a petition urged him to rethink his performance.

Family tree of fish yields surprises

The mighty tuna is more closely related to the delicate seahorse than to a marlin or sailfish. That is one of the surprises from the first comprehensive family tree, or phylogeny, of the "spiny-rayed fish," a group that includes about a third of all living vertebrate species. The work is published July 15 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The spiny-rayed fish are an incredibly diverse group, including tuna and billfish, tiny gobies and seahorses, and oddities such as pufferfish and anglerfish. The fish occupy every aquatic environment from coral reefs and open oceans to lakes and ponds. It includes all the major commercially fished species -- all of which are threatened. But until now, no one has had any idea exactly how more than 18,000 species in 650 families are related to each other, said Peter Wainwright, professor and chair of evolution and ecology at the University of California, Davis and senior author on the paper.

"There has been a 'bush' at the top of the family tree leading to the rest of the vertebrates," Wainwright said. "Now we have this beautiful phylogeny of one-third of all vertebrates."

The study also shows that after roaring along for their first 100 million years, the pace of evolution of the spiny-rayed fish downshifted about 50 million years ago.

Some groups of fish have gone along steadily for millennia; others have gone through bursts of rapid evolution. Overall, the researchers found that the rate at which new species formed was fairly constant across the group from their origin to about 50 million years ago, then dropped about five-fold and has remained at that level since.

That might mean that these fish have essentially filled the available spaces, Wainwright said.

"It's not uncommon in evolution to see a rapid diversification followed by a slowdown, but it's never been seen on such a scale before," he said.

Wainwright's laboratory worked with the lab of Tom Near, a former postdoctoral scholar at UC Davis now at Yale University, and colleagues at the University of Tennessee, The Field Museum in Chicago, Florida Atlantic University and CUNY Staten Island to construct the family tree. Matt Friedman, a paleontologist at the University of Oxford, England, added fossils that helped set dates for branches of the tree.

The researchers looked at 10 genes in more than 500 fish species representing most of the families of spiny-rayed fish. They used the genetic data to construct a tree, grouping related families together. They also looked at the pace of evolution -- the rate at which new species formed -- in different branches, and across the group as a whole.

The spiny-rayed fish originated about 150 million years ago, separating from more primitive fish, such as lampreys, sharks and sturgeon, and from the ancestors of salmon and trout. Since then, they have spread into every aquatic habitat on Earth.

The tree shows some interesting relationships. For example, tuna are more closely related to seahorses than to swordfish or barracuda. The oddly shaped pufferfishes are related to anglerfish, the only fishes whose bodies are wider than they are deep.

Cichlids, a family that includes about 2,000 species of freshwater fish known for brooding their young in their mouths and a favorite for studies of evolution, are related to the engineer gobies, an obscure family of just two species that live on coral reefs and raise their young in a nest.

Wainwright's special interest is in the evolution of fish jaws. Fish have two sets of jawbones, an outer jaw and "pharyngeal jaws" in the throat that adapted to different functions. In some fish, the lower pharyngeal jaw is fused into a single solid bone that can be used to crush prey such as shellfish.

Biologists had assumed that this fused jaw had evolved once and then spread into different groups of fish. Instead, the new tree shows that this structure evolved at least six times in different groups of fish.

Capture of top leader of Mexico's brutal Zetas drug cartel unlikely to quell violence

MEXICO CITY ? The capture of the notoriously brutal Zetas leader Miguel Angel Trevino Morales is a serious blow to Mexico's most feared drug cartel but experts cautioned that taking down the group's command structure is unlikely to diminish violence in the border states where it dominates through terror.

Trevino Morales, 40, was captured before dawn Monday by Mexican Marines who intercepted a pickup truck with $2 million in cash on a dirt road in the countryside outside the border city of Nuevo Laredo, which has long served as the Zetas' base of operations. The truck was halted by a Marine helicopter and Trevino Morales was taken into custody along with a bodyguard and an accountant and eight guns, government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told reporters.

It was the first major blow against an organized crime leader by a Mexican administration struggling to drive down persistently high levels of violence. Experts on the Zetas said that the arrest, at least the eighth capture or killing of a high-ranking Zeta since 2011, could leave behind a series of cells scattered across northern Mexico without a central command but with the same appetite for kidnapping, extortion and other crimes against innocent people.

"It's another link in the destruction of the Zetas as a coherent, identifiable organization," said Alejandro Hope, a former member of Mexico's domestic intelligence service. "There will still be people who call themselves Zetas, bands of individuals who maintain the same modus operandi. There will be fights over illegal networks."

The Zetas remain active in Nuevo Laredo, the nearby border state of Coahuila, the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, parts of north central Mexico and Central America, although Trevino Morales' arrest means the gang has become "a franchise operation not a vertical organization," said George Grayson, an expert on the Zetas and professor of government at the College of William & Mary.

The Zetas leader and his alleged accomplices were flown to Mexico City, where they are expected to eventually be tried in a closed system that usually takes years to prosecute cases, particularly high-profile ones.

Trevino Morales, known as "Z-40," is uniformly described as one of the two most powerful cartel heads in Mexico, the leader of a corps of special forces defectors who went to work for drug traffickers, splintered off into their own cartel in 2010 and metastasized across Mexico, expanding from drug dealing into extortion, kidnapping and human trafficking.

Along the way, the Zetas authored some of the worst atrocities of Mexico's drug war, leaving hundreds of bodies beheaded on roadsides or hanging from bridges, earning a reputation as perhaps the most terrifying of the country's numerous ruthless cartels.

On Trevino Morales' watch, 72 Central and South American migrants were slaughtered by the Zetas in the northern town of San Fernando in 2010, authorities said. By the following year, federal officials announced finding 193 bodies buried in San Fernando, most belonging to migrants kidnapped off buses and killed by the Zetas for various reasons, including their refusal to work as drug mules.

Trevino Morales is charged with ordering the kidnapping and killing of the 265 migrants, along with numerous other charges of murder, torture and other crimes, Sanchez said.
