Do Pets Make Kids Smarter?

Kids dog

Pete Lounsbury, Flickr

If you have or are thinking of having kids, it might be a good idea to also add a pet to the equation. That?s because last month a study found that babies who grow up in households with pets are healthier than their pet-less counterparts. And now a survey of children suggests that having a furry friend is one of the keys to?academic?success.

According to a Pet at Home poll of 1,000 pet-owning children, 79% believe that having a pet has had a positive effect on both their homework and their work at school.

Over 50% of the kids also answered that living with an animal has made them smarter in general.

While just about any kind of pet makes a kid feel more intelligent and better about their school work, for what it?s worth mice and chinchillas seem to really up a youngster?s self-perceived?IQ.

Of course simply asking kids if having a pet makes them smarter isn?t rock solid evidence of increased intelligence. But previous studies have found that pets really do improve the physical and mental health of their owners. So it?s not that much of stretch to believe they can at least make kids feel more positive about their school work.

What do you think? Can a pet make you smarter?

Fried Pizza: Adelina's | Greenpointers

When I walked into the new wine bar called Adelina?s on Greenpoint Ave for a tasting, two things caught my eye: the back corner of the bar was lined with wine barrels labeling each wine on tap with white chalk, and seated at the bar was a row of gorgeous faces, the staff, who was there for a tasting.

?Care to join us?? Toby Buggiani, Adelina?s owner asked.
?Are you asking me to drink before noon. Of course!?

Adelina?s passed the Greenpoint restaurant test of friendly servers without a doubt. Not a surprise since Toby is such a sweetheart.

I also chatted with Josh, a customer who said he liked the former Gypsy Bar, but Adelina?s is ?perfect? because he lives up the block and ?to get a vibe like this [he'd] have to go to Troost,? which also has a morning coffee routine and a wine and beer menu.

Looking around, there is a warm rustic feel, with lots of interesting textures. Toby?s father, Paulo Buggiani, a street artist in LES in the 80s, now living in Rome, ?created artworks on plaster that could easily be confused with contemporary Brooklyn artwork.

Paolo sounds like a true nut in the best way ? the Italian way. When Toby was a kid he remembers that his father put him and his brother in armored suits and set the armor on fire. He also created sails for people wearing roller skates in Manhattan.

Not only did Toby?s Dad help him with the artwork, he helped him partly fund the restaurant with the sale of Keith Haring pieces he recovered from the subway.

On to the food. Toby described his cooking style as ?simple and honest.? I agree. One thing I love about home cooked food is I can shovel it into my mouth portion after portion and not feel like crap, like when I double fist my Nonna?s rice balls.

Everything at Adelina?s is made in house, including the bread and the fresh mozzarella. I was there specifically to sample the rice balls, the pizza fritta (FRIED PIZZA!) and the espresso, of course.

The pizza fritta, a traditional dish of Naples, is leavened dough that is first fried then topped and baked. The dough itself had great flavor, a nice chewy but crispy texture and reminded me of the exterior of Chinese egg rolls. It is very different from the Neapolitan style pizza you get at Roberta?s or Paulie Gee?s. Did I mention that it?s fried?

Next I tried the Truffled Egg with Fontina and Asparagus. It is basically a toad in the hole topped with delicious cheese. Since egg and fontina are both mild in flavor the asparagus really shined. I?ll be back to enjoy this for brunch.

The ?Fagioli al Ucelletto? ? Cannellini Beans with Sage and Tomato were nicely flavored although the fresh beans had too much bite, which often happens when you cook them in acids, like tomato; they just can?t absorb the water. I still managed to eat them all.

The dish that Toby raved about, the Porcini, Cremini, Parsley and Truffle Oil Bruschetta was good but not my favorite dish among all the winners. I wanted more truffle and mushroom flavor. When you make a menu of items inspired by home cooking it is a delicate balance between what you like and your customers? tastes.

That being said Toby is feeling everything out and making adjustments according to the demands of his customers. As a vegetarian, he even includes meat items on the menu.

Notice something about the menu? Much of the dishes are vegetarian or vegan. That is the beauty of Italian peasant food, it is conveniently delicious and vegetarian at the same time.

Last I tasted two pastas dishes, the Sud & the Nord. What I enjoy about Southern Italian Cuisine is the Middle Eastern influence. The flavor of fennel, the sweetness of the raisins and the surprising hint of cumin were all great in this dish. Next time I am ordering it with tuna.

The Nord was a good traditional pesto, Genovese style with potatoes and string beans. After I finished it Toby told me the pasta I ate was gluten free, made with corn and rice. Blasphemy! But it was actually really tasty, not as al dente as it could have been, but the pesto made up for it.

While I was really looking forward to arancini, which are Sicilian rice balls, Toby said he will likely add them later and may experiment with a Roman version called Suplee.

Last but not least, the espresso. ?Short! Short! Short!? Emily the lovely barista made a delicious espresso with Brooklyn Roasting Company BQE coffee. The company is such a stickler about their roasts that they come in and consult the staff. Coffee culture is way out of control in Brooklyn, but according to the staff, who all have worked and lived in San Francisco, it?s even more insane out there.

Greenpoint needs Adelina?s, an easygoing and inexpensive traditional Italian spot that you can pop in for coffee and a cornetti (sweet Italian croissant) in the morning, hang out and enjoy a relaxing wholesome lunch, or enjoy a romantic wine filled evening.

GERD Making you Sleepless? Try Generic Protonix for Cure

So how many times did you have to wake up middle of the night because you were having a feeling of uneasiness in your stomach? The fire burning sensation probably is the reason for your interrupted sleep. Correct? But on second thoughts you would think that you didn't eat anything that was over spicy over dinner then why did you have such a problem? Well, without you taking notice of it you had fire burning sensation throughout the day but a mild one at that which made you believe that its only natural to have such feeling. Probably you would have take a medicine on your own without consulting the doctor which could have triggered the problem further. Well, the reason might be any, but at present all you want is to get back to bed and sleep peacefully. If yes, then the best alternative that you would have is to take the medication of? generic protonix.

The popularly known heartburn is named medically as GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease.

Also known as acid reflux. This is a condition in which the infection gets into the esophagus and not in the stomach where it is supposed to be which makes it difficult to digest as acid belongs to the stomach. The stomach and the esophagus is interlinked through a valve which is why when some kind of acid flows into the esophagus, the burning sensation begins and damages it. This can be quite serious and lead to cancer at times.

There are many symptoms through which one can determine whether or not they are suffering from GERD. Though these vary from individual to individual but mostly these are as follows:

  • Heartburn: this is a feeling of uneasiness felt in the chest right behind the breast bone. Sometimes, the pain can be subtle while other times it could be painfully. This is one of the major or prime symptoms that any individual comes across when feeling uneasy.
  • Nausea: though not as common as the other symptoms, still many people have complaint about getting nausea.
  • Swallowing issues: it is what it states to be exactly where one feels a lump in the throat which is painful too.

One should be extra careful regarding any symptom that one comes across. Whenever one feels skeptical about it, a visit to the doctor should be done immediately. He would be able to determine the exact position of your problem and prescribe you appropriate medication for it. Generic protonix is one sch medicine that has been increasingly prescribed by the doctors to keep acid reflux at bay or under control. One can ask for this drug at any local or internet pharmacy as it is easily available.

New Microsoft Office designed for fingers, styluses, keyboards, and mice

Microsoft preps for "the most ambitious release of Office we?ve ever done," says CEO. But will it be a jack of all trades, master of none?

By Troy Wolverton,?San Jose Mercury News / July 16, 2012

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer speaks at a Microsoft event in San Francisco, Monday, July 16, 2012. Microsoft unveiled a new version of its widely used, lucrative suite of word processing, spreadsheet and email programs Monday, one designed specifically with tablet computers and Internet-based storage in mind.

The updated Office applications have been rejiggered to work more easily with touch-screen devices. One of the prime features of Windows 8 is its Metro interface, which was designed for smartphones and tablets.

?This is the most ambitious release of Office we?ve ever done,? CEO Steve Ballmer announced at a news event here.

The new version of Office is designed to be extraordinarily flexible, Ballmer said. Users will be able to run it on touch-screen tablets and PCs. They will be able to interact with it using their fingers, styluses, keyboards or mice. And they can purchase it as packaged software or subscribe to it as a service.

Microsoft?has only overhauled two of the applications ? the OneNote note-taking program and the Lync collaboration software ? so that they will work under the Metro interface. All the other applications can be used only in Windows? traditional desktop interface.

But the company has added features to all of the Office applications. Word, for example, will get a new ?reading? mode that mimics an e-reader. Users will be able to turn pages and add notes to documents much like they would using Amazon?s Kindle app.

Excel?s upgrade will allow users to see a quick preview of charts and tables without having to go through the steps of creating each one first.

The entire suite of Office software is designed to embrace some of the latest technology trends. By default, the new Office will save users? documents and settings on?Microsoft?s?servers. That will allow users to access all their documents and settings regardless of what Office compatible device they are using, from a Windows PC to a Windows phone.

Social networking also will be highlighted. Users will be able to share documents on Facebook or LinkedIn and instantly connect with contacts on Skype while within the Outlook email program. And?Microsoft?is turning its SharePoint service into something of its own social network, allowing users to post messages, comment on others? messages and share links or videos.

The new version of Office includes plenty of new and promising features, said Mike Silver, an analyst at Gartner, a technology research firm. But he added that it may struggle to catch on.

Microsoft Office 15: A Cloud-based, Touchscreen, 21st Century Upgrade [Hands On]

Metro Look

Office 15 borrows some design elements from Windows 8, giving the suite of programs a Metro look much like the newest version of Microsoft's desktop and mobile OS.

[More from Mashable: ]

First launched on August 1, 1989, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint et al) soon became the standard suite used in businesses, schools and homes everywhere. With Office 15, Microsoft is finally giving the dusty old suite a major 21st century upgrade.

[More from Mashable: ]

Your copy of Office now isn't tied to a particular machine you own; instead, it's tied to you. Office has become a cloud-based subscription service (with three subscription options --pricing and availability to be announced for later). As updates are released during your subscription period, you'll get them for free.

Included in Windows RT machines, Office 15 will also be available as a standalone product. As with Windows 8, you'll download it .

I've spent the past week getting to know Microsoft Office 15 on a Samsung Series 7 tablet. For someone who uses Office everyday, Office 15 definitely has a familiar feel to it -? with a few surprises.

Metrotactular

Office 15 borrows some design elements from Windows 8, giving the suite of programs a Metro look -- much like the newest version of Microsoft's desktop and mobile OS.

The result is a much cleaner, much easier to use suite of software applications. Everything from Microsoft Word to OneNote takes advantage of the new look. While all of the applications have many of the same features you've come to know over the years, the updated user interfaces makes many of the apps feel like a different experience altogether.

You really feel like you're using a next-generation product with Office 15, and the interface makes the suite of software seem as though it was built to be run on a tablet -- rather than a piece of desktop software that just happens to be able to run on one.

Touching Moments

One exceptionally notable new feature in Office 15 is the office suite's new touch controls, designed to be used on touch screens such as Microsoft's self-branded Surface tablet.

OneNote and Lync, in particular, are designed with a Windows 8 feel, with the menus specifically designed to be touched. Taking advantage of the tablet experience, you can handwrite email responses using your stylus and then convert them automatically to text. The tablet stylus can also be used as a laser pointer when presenting.

Still, the novelty of touching your tablet screen to select a document template or pick a new font may fade. During the week I found myself more often that not using a mouse to navigate through windows and make selections rather than touching the screen.

It's nice to have the functionality to navigate via touch when you need it, but doing so is awkward enough -? perhaps because we've become accustomed to using point-and-click interfaces.

Some menus and functions just aren't meant to be touched, at least not the way the apps are currently designed.

Up in the Cloud

SkyDrive is front and center in Office 15. Documents are saved by default to SkyDrive, providing you access to them no matter where you are.

SEE ALSO:

Wherever you go, Office goes with you. Once you're signed in, your settings -- including templates, customer dictionary, and the last document you were working on-- roam with you across different devices.

When working with a document, Office will remember where you left off on one device, and let you pick up at the same place on another. Office documents can be created on the web using Office Web Apps and then opened on your computer, and vice versa.

Making it all easier

Everything in Office 15 seems to work together a little better. Taking advantage of being connected to the web and to the cloud, many of the apps offer a number of small features that turn out to be huge ones when you actually start using them.

For instance, templates for different types of documents are brought directly into Microsoft Office from Office.com, along with a preview. Clicking on the preview brings up a larger version, along with that specific template's star rating from other users.

If you've ever gone hunting for a new template to use for a Word doc, you know how huge this is. Templates ? such as new business cards or a resume -- are now super-easy to find, and easy to download and bring into to Word for editing.

The process is so simple that you wouldn't know that the template wasn't part of Word in the first place.

Multimedia elements, such as YouTube videos can also now be previewed live when brought into Word documents. For instance, clicking on a YouTube video you've inserted into your document will darken the rest of the screen and bring the video front-and-center for your to watch. Clicking anywhere outside of the video player will stop playback and bring you back into your document to continue editing.

A mini version of your calendar is also now available to view at-a-glance in Outlook.

PowerPoint has a new private Presenter View that shows your current and upcoming slides, your presentation time, and your speaker notes at a glance. While you're doing a presentation, you can zoom, mark up and navigate your slides with touch and stylus.

Lync includes multiparty HD video with presentations, shared OneNote notebooks and a virtual whiteboard for collaborative brainstorming.

Get Social

The People Card, which will be familiar to Windows Phone users, is available throughout Office. The card lets you check out your friend's status updates from Facebook, contact information, and activity feeds from LinkedIn along with their picture.

Skype is also built into Office 15. When you sign up for a subscription to Office, you get 60 minutes of Skype world minutes every month. Skype contacts can also be integrated into Lync, so you can call or instant message anyone on Skype quickly.

Yammer -- a private social network for businesses, -- offers integration with SharePoint and Microsoft Dynamics.

Feels like home

Office 15 contains all the programs you've come to know over the years. The suite of software includes Word 2013,: InfoPath Designer 2013, Publisher 2013, OneNote 2013, InfoPath Filler 2013, Excel 2013, Outlook 2013, PowerPoint 2013, Lync 2013, and Access 2013.

After a few days of working in the in the new environment, it started to feel like home -- so much so that going back to the current version of Office felt like I had pulled out a PC from a decade ago.

Are you contemplating the upgrade to Office 15? Let us know in the comments.

Skype bug forwards conversation snippets to random people

11 hrs.

Skype has confirmed that?? under "rare circumstances" ??parts of instant message conversations made over the chat service may be forwarded to an unintended recipient.?

How devastating is this issue??

A Skype spokesperson didn't elaborate beyond a pre-written statement, but based on user comments in the official Skype support forums, we can piece together what happens if you're one of the unlucky few affected by this bug.

Let's say that User A and User B are exchanging instant messages over Skype today. Tomorrow, User A might log on and find a message from User C?? one of his or her contacts???asking about something that was said in that conversation. The message User C received, without any action by User A or User B,?would've been a line or two from the conversation the two had.

Scary, no? Just think back to the last few instant message conversations you've had and imagine what would happen if some?random lines from it were sent to a random person on your or your conversation partner's contact lists. (Now that I think about my own conversations, I suddenly want to upgrade that "scary" to a "terrifying.")

The Skype spokesperson I spoke to explained that the company is aware of the issue and will be rolling out a fix for it "in the next few days." Users will be notified that they should download an updated version of Skype once that is available.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Car Repair Chicago- Automotive Fluids: The Consequences of ...

Last updated 21 hours ago

Fluids are some of the most vital components in your engine. Without them, your car would simply not run. It?s important to realize the roles that motor oil, coolant, transmission, and brake fluids play in maintaining your engine and to have them topped off, changed, or flushed as part of your auto service routine. Here is a look at the consequences of neglecting routine fluid changes:

If your engine is the heart of your car, your motor oil is your car?s lifeblood?it keeps many of the vital moving parts of your car lubricated. You risk ruining your engine by driving around with old, dirty, or insufficient motor oil.

Your coolant levels need to be checked and filled as needed to prevent your engine from overheating. While glycol in the coolant prevents your car?s fluids from reaching the boiling point in hot weather, coolant also prevents your car?s fluids from turning into ice when it?s cold. Antifreeze includes additives that prevent rust and corrosion in the radiator, heater, and engine.

Brake fluid with too much moisture in it is more likely to boil over when you brake suddenly. This greatly diminishes your brakes? ability to stop the car. Most vehicles need a brake fluid change once a year or every other year; check your owner?s manual or ask a trusted mechanic to find out the right time for your vehicle.

Keeping the fluids topped off isn?t always enough. Some fluids have to be flushed every 60,000 miles, like transmission and differential fluid. Maintaining, changing, and flushing your car?s fluids will prevent more serious problems from developing down the road.

Bucaro Brothers Auto Care has been keeping vehicles running properly since 1976. Give us a call at (773) 570-4541 for routine fluid checks and changes, brake repairs, and other auto mechanic services in Chicago.
