Pa. railroad calendar delivered 63 years late

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) ? A northeastern Pennsylvania newspaper has just received a calendar to help ring in the new year ? except the year is 1950.

Scranton's The Times-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/S23ykD ) a mail carrier delivered it 63 years late without explanation on Friday.

The large tube contained a 1950 Pennsylvania Railroad calendar addressed to James Flanagan, former general manager of The Scranton Times.

The calendar includes a holiday greeting from a railroad executive dated December 1949. Flanagan died that month.

A U.S. Postal Service spokesman says lost mail is sometimes found when a machine is dismantled or office space is renovated.

Times-Tribune publisher Bobby Lynett says he'll see if the Steamtown National Historic Site railroad museum is interested in the calendar. If not, he'll display it in the newspaper's offices.

Lovie's firing was inevitable

December 31, 2012, 9:58 am

Lovie Smith went into the 2012 season in need of a rebound from the franchise disappointment of 2011 that saw a 7-3 start crumble into an 8-8 year. What he and the Bears got was an even more catastrophic collapse, from 7-1 and the No. 2 spot in a playoff lineup to out of the playoffs at 10-6.

?

The result was the end to a nine-year run that included only one trip to a Super Bowl, another to an NFC Championship game and one other to the playoffs and only one year with fewer than seven wins.

?

But evaluations by organizations are based less on the past than on perceptions of where the future is leading. Several reasons lay at the root of the Bears? decision to close the Lovie Smith epoch and go in the proverbial ?another direction:?

?

Simple need for change of direction

?

George McCaskey succeeded brother Michael as chairman of the board prior to the 2011 season. The transition was seamless, orderly and in the natural organizational order. Michael had held the job since the death of his father Ed and he was ready to cede the office while remaining on the board of directors.

?

The course of the 2011 season was such that Jerry Angelo was fired after the collapse from 7-3 to 8-8. Ted Phillips remained as president but the organization was clearly not satisfied with what had occurred on the field. Key in the decision was the conclusion that the Bears were losing ground rather than gaining on the Green Bay Packers and (at the time) Detroit Lions.

?

The season-turning injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte factored into Smith keeping his job, and the blame was assigned to Angelo for failing to sufficiently shore up the roster.

?

Fast forward to 2012 and another two inept performances against Green Bay and one against the Minnesota Vikings, the new upstarts in the NFC.

?

Failures on offense

?

Since Mike Ditka left after 1992, the Bears have had three consecutive coaches from defensive backgrounds: Dave Wannstedt, defensive coordinator in Dallas; Dick Jauron, Jacksonville defensive coordinator, and Smith, coordinator of the St. Louis defense.

?

Smith has been by far the most successful. But even for him the result has been just one losing trip to a Super Bowl, one other to a loss (to Green Bay) in the 2010 NFC Championship game, and a first-round loss in the 2005 divisional round.

?

The biggest single reason was Smith?s problems finding an offensive coordinator, or at least recently one who could co-exist with Cutler. The offense never ranked higher than 15th in yardage in Smith?s tenure.

?

More to the immediate situation, the offense got worse despite the efforts of Phil Emery to supply the wide-receiver firepower that Jay Cutler supposedly needed. Emery mortgaged a piece of the future by giving up two third-round picks for Brandon Marshall and used a second-rounder in 2012 for Alshon Jeffery.

?

Yet the offense degenerated into the Cutler-Marshall show and closed out of town.

?

The revolving college of coordinators on offense accelerated with the 1009 arrival of Cutler ? Ron Turner out after 2009, Mike Martz after 2011, Mike Tice one-and-done in 2012. The franchise?s commitment to Cutler remains to be seen this offseason but in a league that tilts toward facilitating offense, the Smith Bears have failed.

?

Big-game failures

?

Smith achieved a 3-3 record in the postseason. Since the 2006 trip to the Super Bowl he was 1-1, both in the 2010 playoffs.

?

That is a better mark than Mike Ditka in his post-Super Bowl XX time. Ditka was 2-5 with three first-game eliminations and was fired in after a 5-11 meltdown in 1992.

?

But Smith?s time is marred by a handful of bad defeats with the playoffs at stake.

?

The Bears fell to the Houston Texans (7-8 at the time) in the final game of 2008 when a win would have had them in the playoffs. And while the Minnesota Vikings might still have beaten the Green Bay Packers to squeeze past the Bears into the 2012 playoffs, Smith?s team failed to beat a doormat in the Detroit Lions (4-11) when it mattered.

?

The Detroit game mattered because the Bears? defense, Smith?s signature unit, failed to halt two long touchdown drives to lose the Seattle game. That was followed by losses at Minnesota and to Green Bay at home when either would have allowed the Bears to keep control of their own playoff future.

OSU football: Texas' Alex Okafor sends the chess pieces flying

SAN ANTONIO ? Why didn't Oregon State keep running the ball?

Many fans, after watching Storm Woods carry the ball 15 times for 98 yards in the first half Saturday, were asking that question. In the second half, the Beavers took to the air, Texas responded by crushing the Alamo Bowl sack record, and the Longhorns won 31-27.

When it was over, Texas had 10 sacks ? 4 ? by Alex Okafor, who bull-rushed his way up the NFL Draft boards and stole the thunder from former high school teammate Woods ? and the Beavers were left to explain what went horribly wrong after halftime.

"In the second half, we never really did get back to running the ball like we did in the first half,'' OSU coach Mike Riley said. "Offensively, we had a hard time when we dropped back pass blocking the front, and so they gave us some fits doing that. It wasn't very good to get in very many passing situations.''

In a dramatic stat, made more so by the lost yardage in sacks (77 yards), the Beavers rushed for 111 yards in the first half and finished with 103 yards rushing.

Texas, in the midst of its worst defensive season in school history, had two glaring issues in the first half: Tight end Connor Hamlett was roaming free in the large gaps of open field, and Woods was slicing through the Longhorns defense at 6 ? yards a clip.

So the Longhorns stacked the box and went to a man-to-man defense, and Cody Vaz and the OSU passing game couldn't take advantage.

Woods carried six times from 20 yards after halftime, and Okafor put on one of the most dominating performances an opposing defensive lineman has had against the Beavers in recent memory.

Running around but mostly through right tackle Colin Kelly, Okafor single-handedly shifted momentum to the Longhorns, then his rejuvenated teammates got into the act in what was called a "feeding frenzy.''

The Beavers tried putting a tight end over Okafor, they tried "chipping'' him with a running back, but that only seemed to make him angry.

"Those sacks we gave up really put us in a bind,'' offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said. "They made it hard. It was a bad matchup with that D-end and we weren't able to handle that rush. He gave us fits.''

Okafor, named the bowl's defensive MVP in one of the easiest ballots ever to be filled out, said it was a matter of preparation.

"We've just been breaking down film all month, and coach (Manny) Diaz saw a weakness in the protection, and he put me in a great position to go make plays.

Langsdorf said the Beavers adjusted to Texas' adjustment and ran a few screens, which backfired.

"We just misfired on a few throws,'' Langsdorf said. "You get a few throws, get in better situations, get a better chance to run. We got in some long-yardage situations that just killed us and forced us to throw the ball more.''

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Woods carried the ball for two yards.

On the next 10 1st-and-10 plays, the Beavers passed seven times. The combined result of those seven passes: Minus-three yards.

"It's hard to be able to attack a coverage and keep a bunch of guys in to help protect and still be able to get guys open,'' Riley said.

So, in a game of moves and counter-moves, Okafor messed up the whole equation. He said he and Diaz noticed the OSU linemen were "short setters,'' and he simply took the direct approach to disrupting Vaz.

Riley was asked whether he considered going with Sean Mannion at quarterback (he did come in for a series while Vaz had his left ankle attended to but did not throw a pass).

"Sometimes when there's a feeding frenzy, it's not a great deal for anybody quarterbacking at that time,'' Riley said.

Langsdorf agreed there was little Vaz could do in the face of that rush.

"He's got power and strength and speed,'' Langsdorf said of Okafor. "The quarterback had no chance. He would come so fast he was right in his lap.

We've got to be able to get lower and be stronger and keep that pocket open.''

Asked if the Beavers should have run more, Langsdorf said that's easier said than done. Riley said hindsight always makes for some different play calls.

"I probably will regret a lot of calls as we go through and evaluate this game,'' he said.

General's battle with PTSD leads him to the brink

SYDNEY (AP) ? In the exploding hell of battle, a single hand poked through the earth.

John Cantwell could see the ridges and calluses of the skin, and the pile of desert sand that had swallowed the rest of the Iraqi soldier. The troops Cantwell was fighting alongside in the Gulf War had used bulldozing tanks to bury the man alive.

This hand ? so jarringly human amid the cold mechanics of bombs and anonymous enemies ? was about to wedge itself, the Australian man would write decades later, "like a splinter under the skin of my soul." It would lead, along with other battlefield horrors, to the splintering of his mind and to a locked psychiatric ward. And it would lead to the abrupt end of a 38-year military career that saw him ascend to remarkable heights as the commander of Australia's 1,500 troops in Afghanistan.

In the process, Maj. Gen. Cantwell would become two people: a competent warrior on the outside. A cowering wreck on the inside.

He hid his agony to survive, to protect his loved ones and ? he admits it ? to pursue professional glory. But in the end, the man with two selves found he had lost himself completely.

A disheartening number of veterans suffer post-traumatic stress disorder. What made Cantwell so extraordinary was his ability to hide his escalating pain for so long, while simultaneously soaring through the military's ranks ? eventually taking charge of an entire nation's troops in a war zone.

But the higher he climbed, the farther he fell into the abyss of mental illness.

"I became an excellent actor," he says, 20 years into his battle with PTSD and going public for the first time with the release of his autobiography, "Exit Wounds."

"It did, though, come at a price. It was like pressure building in a hose and you finally release the tap."

And when that tap was opened, Cantwell nearly drowned.

___

IRAQ

He had practically begged his way onto the battlefield.

In 1974, he joined Australia's Army as a 17-year-old private, after a childhood spent worshipping Vietnam veterans and poring over military-themed comic books. He ended up on exchange with the British Army, and two years later, the Gulf War erupted. Cantwell hounded his superiors for his first chance at combat. "Be careful what you wish for, John," one warned him. But on Dec. 17, 1990, he said goodbye to his wife and two sons and headed to the Persian Gulf.

It was exciting at first ? the strategizing, the explosions, the sense of being part of something big. He whooped with victory alongside his comrades when bombs blew apart Iraqi artillery.

Then came the hand.

Cantwell stared at it as his tank rolled past. He had been unnerved by the plan for American troops to bulldoze over a network of trenches hiding Iraqi soldiers, but had said nothing. Now he wondered: Had the soldier been reaching for help when he was entombed?

The U.S. Defense Department would later defend the operation as a necessity of war, arguing that the Iraqis who were killed had chosen to stay in the trenches and fight. The Defense Department's former spokesman, Pete Williams, told reporters at the time: "There is no nice way to kill somebody in war. War is hell."

On the battlefield, there was no time to process it. Cantwell was a warrior, and this was war. He pushed forward.

The horrors piled up. He saw the twisted, charred remains of men. He fought to stay calm when several small bombs exploded under his vehicle. Inside a blood-and-excrement-smeared torture chamber in a former Iraqi headquarters, he saw a drill, hammers, pliers and rope. He imagined the screams of the victims.

Through it all, he knew he must remain focused. That was what he had been trained to do, and he did. But there were moments when he felt something gnawing at him.

He was looking for survivors near a blown-out truck when he spotted the first head lying in the sand. A second head lay nearby, one eye staring back at him, a scarf still wrapped around the remains of the neck.

Cantwell felt an overwhelming compulsion to put the men back together.

With sweaty hands, he lifted the second head by the scarf and carried it over to its former body. He grabbed the other head by the hair and placed it alongside the shoulders to which it had once been attached.

Then he climbed into his tank, and got back to the business of war.

___

AUSTRALIA

Cantwell was falling apart.

The nightmares arrived swift and brutal upon his return to Australia. In them, the hand summons him. He falls to his knees, helpless as the hand yanks him into the ground toward certain death.

He awoke to his own screams.

The nightly torment was relentless. He dreamed of being blown apart by land mines, of the decapitated heads. Mornings brought exhaustion and flashbacks. In public, he scanned crowded areas for exits, convinced an attack was imminent. Lightning made him jump.

The nightmares grew worse. One night, he shoved his wife Jane out of bed, pinned her against the wall and held his arm across her throat. Jane was terrified. When her husband woke up, so was he. What if he had hurt her?

He suffered alone. At the time, Australia hadn't experienced battle since Vietnam, so he was an anomaly. He hid it from his sons, wanting to protect them. He confided in Jane, but only to an extent. He worried his fear would contaminate her.

He began to live behind a mask. Every morning, he dragged himself out of bed and ruthlessly quarantined his fear into a tiny box inside his mind. He showered, shaved, slapped on a smile and adopted a confident tone: This is the John Cantwell the rest of the world will see.

The double life was exhausting. He consulted a psychiatrist, who offered a cold dismissal: Get on with your job and your life. Stop fixating on bad memories.

He slid further into depression. A year later, a psychologist diagnosed him with PTSD. Cantwell took sleeping pills at night to try and find peace.

It never came.

___

IRAQ

It was 2006, and the Iraq war was raging when Cantwell landed in Baghdad. Australia had sent 2,000 troops to support the U.S. and the British, and Cantwell, by then a brigadier, was deployed to coordinate operations across the country.

Despite his PTSD, he'd lobbied hard for this job. Maybe he could help, he told himself. And maybe if he returned to the place where his torture began, he could find a way to move on.

This time, though, his decisions determined whether his soldiers lived or died.

One day, he had to choose which of two groups of soldiers would travel with the only available explosives-clearing team. The group he sent out with the team had no trouble. The group he sent out alone hit a roadside bomb.

Three soldiers died. Cantwell wanted to vomit.

The violence left him in despair. He was visiting a neighborhood when a car bomb exploded. Cantwell stared at brain matter and blood sprayed across a wall. Two tiny pink sandals lay on the ground below the stain. One floated in a pool of blood, the wind turning it in a circle.

Cantwell knew the dead child's sandals would join the hand in his nightmares.

He grew bitter and disillusioned. The job left little time for sleep. When he did, the nightmares were grislier than ever.

An officer asked one morning if he was OK. Cantwell assured him: "I'm fine."

He wasn't. But before he left Baghdad, he was promoted to major general and appointed Deputy Chief of the Australian Army.

___

AUSTRALIA

Jane was stricken by her husband's appearance when he returned home. He was exhausted and sick.

The guilt of the soldiers' deaths from the roadside bomb was eating at him. Jane tried to assure him he was not responsible. He ignored her. In his mind, it would always be his fault.

He quietly visited another psychiatrist who put him on medication. It did little to help.

The pressure of pretending was almost unbearable.

___

AFGHANISTAN

Cantwell stared at the two flag-draped caskets before him. Inside lay the first Australians to die in Afghanistan since Cantwell had taken command of Australia's forces in the Middle East.

They had been his responsibility. Now they were dead, torn apart in an explosion.

At their memorial, he spoke of bravery and sacrifice. Many in the audience cried. He strangled his own misery into silence.

After the service, he climbed on board the plane bound for the morgue and sat next to the caskets, thinking about the men inside. His warrior self tried to reject the nagging feeling that they had died because of him. He tried to think rationally: He had done his best.

But the line between his two selves was disintegrating. He began to cry. A friend on board asked if he was OK.

Cantwell could not answer.

___

AUSTRALIA

He wondered if all the bloodshed was worth it.

He was at the beach on vacation with Jane. But he was detached from everyone and everything.

There were rumors he was up for a promotion to Chief of the Army when he was summoned to the nation's capital to give his debrief on Afghanistan.

He donned the warrior mask one last time. He appeared calm, made jokes.

When it was over, his superior asked him how he was really doing.

Cantwell surrendered. He said: I am not OK. I am not sleeping. I am not who you think I am. Please tell the chief of the defense force.

Cantwell told the chief himself that he could not take the job. The chief understood.

His truth exposed, Cantwell hoped the worst was over. It was not. On a train, he was so startled by the conductor calling out for tickets that he shouted in terror. The other passengers laughed. He cried.

A psychiatrist finally asked: Had he thought of suicide?

He answered: Yes.

The pressure that had been building for 20 years was at bursting point.

Cantwell let go.

___

A pajama-clad woman in the psychiatric ward asked the general why he was there.

He wondered, too.

He had checked himself into this hospital, knowing he was broken. Still, he argued with himself: What is a major general doing here?

The doctors changed his medication, and he attended regular counseling sessions. One night, he only had one horrible dream ? an improvement.

He left after a week of intense treatment. A few months later, he retired. He and Jane moved to a peaceful coastal community, where he continues his therapy.

He doesn't regret his career. Australia's Defense Chief Gen. David Hurley said Cantwell's courageous decision to go public has already encouraged other members of the military to come forward with their own struggles.

But speaking out isn't easy. Military personnel often fear the stigma of mental illness will ruin their careers, and they worry that people will think they are not fit to lead, says Matthew Friedman, executive director of the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs National Center for PTSD.

To Cantwell, soldiers are simply not conditioned to expose their pain.

"We've instilled in them this idea of physical and mental toughness ? that's how they win battle, that's how we win wars," Cantwell says. "We expect that same person with the self-image of a warrior ? someone who is tough and imperturbable and able to shrug off pain and difficult environments and horror and get on with their job ? suddenly we expect them to turn around and open up? It just doesn't work."

He sits at his computer and reaches for the mouse. There is a click as a button attached to the bracelet he wears hits the table. He wove it out of parachute cord as a reminder of the 10 men who died under his command in Afghanistan.

He insists the bracelet is not a punishment but a mark of respect.

Maybe it is both.

___

How are you feeling today, John?

His answer is now honest: Not good.

His sleep has been tormented by the usual nightmares. Upon waking, he sees the headline that another Australian soldier has died in Afghanistan.

His stomach drops. He knows these feelings may never go away. He hopes he can eventually forgive himself for the men who died under his command. But he never wants to forget.

"One day I'm hoping to be able to touch on these emotions, experience them and yet not let them get their hooks into me," he says. "That'll come one day. One day."

Until then, he will focus on rebuilding himself ? his real self. He wants to learn to sail and scuba dive. He wants to write and paint and draw ("something a bit creative rather than destructive," he says with a chuckle.) Maybe he'll work with veterans, or become a mental health advocate.

Not long ago, he turned 56. He wanted to celebrate with a trip to the beach, but driving a car brings flashbacks of car bombers in Iraq. So he and Jane hopped on his motorcycle and roared down the road. At a surf club, they grabbed seats on the deck. The general clutched a cold beer.

"Life is pretty good," he thought, watching the waves roll in. "Despite everything ? life is pretty good."

Pros of Cheap Travel Insurance ? Steps on Air

Travel insurance is typically a short term?insurance that is meant to cover medical expenses, financial loss, and other?emergencies of travellers. This insurance will cover trips in one?s own country?and abroad. Travel insurance can be purchased for one specific trip or on an?annual basis. The insurance is designed to cover the traveller or the traveller?s?family, depending upon the policy. If purchasing an annual policy, cancellation?insurance is not covered.

What does Travel Insurance Cover?

There are three types of insurance coverage. Cancellation insurance is designed?to reimburse the traveller if the they are unable to go on the trip because?they got sick or if there is a family emergency. It can also be used in cases?where the travel company or vessel (example: cruise ship) has gone out of?business. Personal effects insurance is designed to cover personal items that?get lost, are stolen, or damaged because of weather. And the final one is?emergency medical insurance. This insurance is designed to provide adequate?medical attention and care if there should be an accident or an illness while?away. Additional optional coverage may cover car rental, dental procedures?during travel, and death during travel.

How much does Travel Insurance Cost?

Depending upon the type of insurance purchased, it can range from 5 to 7 precent?additional cost. So it can add a few hundred dollars onto the base of the?amount paid for the trip originally. Policies and company prices vary, so it is?wise to shop around for the best rate.

If a person finds themselves traveling often, it is a good idea to purchase?cheap travel insurance. Having insurance offers peace of mind in the event of?something unexpected happening. There?s no reason not to consider having?insurance, especially at a low rate. Some policies that people currently have?will cover various issues. For example, a credit card that is used to book a?trip, may offer partial or total cancellation coverage. A person?s homeowner or?renter?s insurance may cover theft, even if it doesn?t happen at home. Standard?procedure is that an airline will cover a person?s baggage for $1500. Ouya developer kits are shipping, $99 Android game console ...

The makers of the Ouya video game console have started shipping developer kits to folks who paid $699 or more during the team?s successful Kickstarter campaign. The company plans to start shipping Ouya units to customers early in 2013, with the video game console selling for about $99 plus shipping.

ouya

SlashGear reports the first units should begin arriving this week.

The Ouya game console is a small box with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, a USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, and HDMI ports.

It runs Google Android software, but it?s not a phone or a tablet. Instead the Ouya console is designed to be plugged into your television so you can play games on the big screen. It also includes a wireless game controller, a game store, and more.

The developer consoles come with two controllers ? but their main appeal is that they?re shipping a few months ahead of the final units, which should give game developers (or serious enthusiasts) a chance to try out the device before it?s available to the general public, and adapt games to run on the platform.

While there?s no shortage of video game consoles for the living room, the developers of the Ouya project want to lower the barriers to entry for independent game developers. Basically, if you can create a game that runs on Android, it can run on Ouya ? you don?t need to go through the hassle of signing with a game publisher, packaging the title on a disc and distributing it to game stores.

On the other hand, the Ouya is expected to ship to regular customers in early 2013 with hardware that was state of the art in early 2012. While you can still write some pretty nifty games for the Tegra 3 processor, Samsung and Qualcomm are already offering mobile processors with significantly more graphics power, and NVIDIA is expected to launch a Tegra 4 chip soon.

Will the Ouya feel dated by the time it finally arrives? Then again? with a $99 price tag, does it really matter?

Vegas police seek information about missing girl

This undated photo provided by the Las Vegas Police Department shows Jade Moris, 10, who police are searching for after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. This booking photo provided by the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nev,. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, shows 50-year-old Brenda Stokes. Police in Las Vegas have issued a plea for information about 10-year-old Jade Morris after she failed to return home Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from a shopping trip with a woman who is thought to be Stokes. Stokes was arrested that night and accused of slashing the face of a female co-worker at the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip. She made her first appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. (AP Photo/Clark County Detention Center )

(AP) ? Police in Las Vegas issued a new plea for information Thursday about a 10-year-old girl last seen with a casino card dealer just hours before the woman was accused of slashing a co-worker's face with razor blades at a Las Vegas Strip resort.

"We're hoping to reach somebody who may have information that will lead us to the whereabouts of this young girl," police Capt. Chris Jones said.

Police issued a missing persons alert late Tuesday about Jade Morris, who officials say was last seen by her family about 5 p.m. last Friday with Brenda Stokes.

Stokes, 50, also uses the name Brenda Wilson. Police said she was a friend of the girl's father, and was supposed to have taken the girl Christmas shopping at an outlet mall off Interstate 15 near downtown Las Vegas.

Jones, a supervisor in the department's robbery-homicide division, said Stokes returned to another friend the red 2007 Saab sedan that she borrowed for the shopping trip.

A short time later, Stokes was arrested at the Bellagio casino after allegedly attacking a female co-worker, Joyce Rhone, as the woman dealt blackjack.

Stokes is accused of wielding a razor blade in each hand as she attacked Rhone, who was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth. A police arrest report said Rhone, 44, also had several smaller cuts around her right eye.

Records show that Stokes was being held Thursday on $60,000 bail at the Clark County jail on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

She told a judge Wednesday that she had not obtained a lawyer. She is due again in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday.

The arrest report says casino video shows Stokes attacking Rhone before a casino patron and security officers intervene. Officer Marcus Martin said the video is evidence that may be shown by prosecutors in court but will not be made public by police.

Police said Stokes later told investigators that she attacked Rhone over harassing phone calls and an unspecified betrayal that ended their seven-year friendship.

Stokes also told police she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

She is reported to have told investigators she hadn't taken a prescription anti-anxiety drug Friday, and that, "Sometimes people just snap."

Mental Health Recovery

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) December 18, 2012

With the new year fast approaching, many women are trying to refresh their lives and are making resolutions for a happier, healthier 2013. For women with mental health or substance abuse issues, however, long-ignored roadblocks can impede achievement of a healthy start. Family, friend, fitness and finance goals are difficult to focus on when women are facing medical or legal troubles.

Women with mood disorders or substance abuse issues may have important legal issues that require immediate attention. Mood disorders often lead to legal repercussions; for example, women with bipolar disorder may take on excessive financial burdens, face discrimination at work or experience arrest. Women with mood disorders may also face legal issues regarding the effects of violence, divorce or substance abuse.

Brookhaven Retreat teaches women in its residential treatment facility various ways of coping with mood disorders and protecting their futures so that mental health issues do not prevent them from living full and safe lives. Only then can women focus on creating a happy new year. Once medical safety has been assured, women learn to protect their future, possessions, families and medical health with a variety of legal options. Key options Brookhaven Retreat teaches women in its program include:

Have a Lawyer: Women with mental health issues should have a lawyer who is familiar with their medical history and directions should something occur. Should women face discrimination or require hospitalization, this lawyer would serve as a contact for placing protective measures into effect.

Create Advanced Directives: Advanced directives serve to communicate preferences for mental health treatment if women are unable to give consent themselves. Because mental health issues may crop up unexpectedly, these legal documents specify the care women wish to receive and the types of treatment and medication they do not wish to be given. Advanced directives should be part of a woman?s medical record. Her doctors and health care proxy should be given copies so that, should she be admitted to a mental health facility, her specific instructions are easily accessible.

Power of Attorney: Women with mood disorders can be resistant about continuing necessary medication. Giving a trusted loved one or family member power of attorney grants them the ability to admit a woman to a psychiatric facility should she display symptoms dangerous to her well-being. This is especially important for women complying with terms of probation who may resist taking necessary precautions.

It is important that women with mental health issues consider the resources required for long-term emotional recovery. Often these resources should include legal support.

Brookhaven Retreat teaches the women in its residential treatment facility that when focusing on a path to happiness, they need to create a plan to prevent future consequences and protect the lives they are creating. Familiarity with the legal system and familiarity with a lawyer both help safeguard long-term wellness.

About Brookhaven Retreat

Brookhaven Retreat is a women?s treatment center nestled on a naturally beautiful 48-acre site secluded in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. It has helped hundreds of women across the United States overcome depression, trauma, anxiety, substance use and a range of other behavioral health challenges. Brookhaven?s Founder, Jacqueline Dawes, has predicated its gender-specific treatment on ?healing emotional breakage? for women. In this way, she has established a sanctuary and a place where women can feel safe, secure and cared for by a staff of highly trained professionals.

Church bells toll 26 times for Newtown victims

During a somber bell-ringing ceremony, the Newtown community gathered to remember the students and teachers who died in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

Twenty-six times the bells tolled Friday, punctuating a moment of silence that descended on Newtown, Conn., and many other communities across the country to mark one week since the horror at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

From white-steepled churches in the Georgia countryside to the majestic National Cathedral in Washington, the peals began at 9:30 a.m. ? the same time last Friday that gunman Adam Lanza began the rampage that tore a hole in the heart of America.

There was one ring for each of the 20 first-graders and six staff members killed by high-powered rifle fire. In some places, bells clanged a 27th time for Lanza's mother, who owned the guns her son used to kill her, the children and educators, or even 28 times to include the suspect?s suicide.

"When I heard the 26 bells?ring it just melted my soul," Kerrie Glassman, who lives in the village of Sandy Hook and knew seven victims, told the Associated Press. "It's just overwhelming. You just can't believe this happened in our town."

The simple, somber remembrance, which was called for by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy and seized upon by religious and government leaders from coast to coast, was at once heart-breaking and healing.

People at Newtown's Blue Colony diner observe a moment of silence for victims of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, exactly one week after the deadly attack.

Images of silence: Remembering the Newtown school victims one week later

The moment was marked as some families were still preparing to bury their murdered loved ones and as a renewed debate over gun control raged, with the National Rifle Association calling for armed guards in all schools.

President Obama, who responded to an online petition for gun restrictions with a video message that said ?We hear you,? observed it in private.

Elsewhere, people gathered together. In Newtown, they paused at makeshift memorials at the town Christmas tree and at the firehouse where survivors were brought after the shooting. Simultaneously, the din of New York's stock exchanges was muted.

Michelle Obama: My heart aches for you

St. Alban?s Episcopal Church in Bexley, Ohio -- some 600 miles from Newtown, Conn. -- doesn?t have a bell to ring, so it commemorated the one-week mark with morning fast and prayer.

NBC News

Fireman in Newtown mark a moment of silence for victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

?We all feel like we want to do something. We want to share the burden of our sisters and brothers in Connecticut,? Susan Marie Smith, rector of the church, told NBC News.

While Malloy called for 26 rings, the Stockbridge First United Methodist Church in Georgia had decided to ring its bell 27 times to include Nancy Lanza.

?I think for us, she?s a victim, too,? said the Rev. Jody Ray, the pastor. ?We probably should have included the young man who committed the crime.

?It?s a tragedy. At the end of the day, people are dead and in response to tragedy, we want to remember all those who were involved? We?re not going to stand in judgment.?

Facebook's new Poke app sends self-destructing messages

30 min.

We've heard rumors that Facebook's working on an app which will allow you to?send messages that'll self-destruct after being viewed???and on Friday the social network confirmed the whispers. The app's called Poke and it is now available to iOS users.

It's a bit odd that Facebook decided to name the new app after an annoying feature that's been around since 2004, but we won't fret about that oddity too long.?

Based on the explanation given in a post in Facebook's Newsroom, Poke is somewhat similar to Snapchat. Both apps allow you to send messages, photos or videos which will expire a specific amount of time after being viewed. (Though with Poke you've got the added ability to send ... a poke.)

When you communicate with a friend via Poke, you're able to?set a message to expire in 1, 3, 5?or 10 seconds. As soon as time runs out, the message will disappear. In order to view a message, you find it in the app and "press and hold the message until it expires."

Unlike Snapchat, Poke does not appear to notify users if a message?recipient takes a screenshot of the correspondence before it expires. In a way, this is good, because it doesn't give a false sense of security. On the other hand, some users might forget that someone can easily turn their temporary messages into something that'll haunt them permanently.

Poke is expected to hit the?Apple App Store on Friday afternoon. It'll work on iPhone, iPod Touch?and iPad. No word as to whether Android users will ever get in on the fun.

What Is A Scaffold Piercing? | Entertainment & Arts

Scaffold piercing has gained a lot of popularity these days among men and women who happen to be body modification enthusiasts. It is their way of expressing themselves as well as delving into body art. Also called industrial piercing, this body modification consists of two piercings along the top of the ear that are connected by a bar that passes through both holes.

In order to make sure that you have a scaffold piercing that would really stand out in a crowd, you have to be sure that the piercing is done by a professional with a lot of experience in the business. This is also to ensure that the piercing is done correctly and that there is no chance of infection at all. Professional body piercers are trained and certified for your protection. Make sure you see a reputable piercer for this job.

Keep in mind that scaffold piercing must be done using only the highest quality of surgical stainless steel that is recommended by professional piercers. Thus, adequate attention must be given to proper after care to avoid infection and skin irritations.

Choose professionals that conduct business under the highest possible sanitary conditions. Pick a piercer who is knowledgeable in scaffold piercing, has a lot of experience and has undergone sufficient training. You would want someone who would be able to put you at ease as the entire procedure can be extremely uncomfortable, even with the use of anesthesia. Do not be afraid to ask to see the piercer?s qualifications.

After the work of piercing is done, you have to make sure that your wounds will not get infected. In order to prevent any kind of infection or irritation, be sure to use the best kind of material suited for piercing. Take your pick from surgical stainless steel, titanium or eighteen to twenty four karat gold. Gold is the most expensive so if you are on a somewhat limited budget, opt for the highest quality of surgical stainless steel that is durable, fashionable looking and safe for your ear.

Scaffold piercing can take a little while to be completely healed so you have to be very patient. Depending on the person?s after care routines, healing can take anywhere from three months to an entire year. You certainly have to be very careful and make sure your piercings are kept clean and not fiddled around with. Do not be surprised if you experience some swelling, a little pain and throbbing after the piercing. This can take a few days to a week maximum for it to be completely gone.

For the first two weeks after you have had your scaffold piercing, take care to clean it about twice a day to prevent any kind of infection from setting in. Keep your hands away from it when you are not cleaning it so you will not transfer any germs to the wound. Keep your hair away from the wound as much as possible. Be diligent in cleaning it for the first two weeks as per instructions to ensure quick healing.

It usually takes a minimum of three months for a scaffold piercing [http://bodypiercingplus.com/body-piercing/what-the-heck-is-an-industrial-ear-piercing.html] to heal completely. After three months of making sure that you follow every instruction of your piercer and you have kept your wounds clean, it is time to flaunt those piercings and start having fun with some great body piercing jewelry [http://bodypiercingplus.com/category/body-piercing-jewelry].

Pope offers op-ed reflections at Christmas

ROME (AP) ? In a first for a pope, Benedict XVI has written an article for a secular newspaper, advising in the Financial Times that Christmas is a time for serious thought.

The op-ed published Thursday says Christmas is a "time of great joy" and also "an occasion for deep reflection, even an examination of conscience."

Benedict has been a prolific writer throughout his career as a bishop, senior Vatican official and pope. The Vatican says he has previously written for an Italian religious affairs magazine and the weekly newspaper of his former diocese in Munich.

It says in a statement the pope "willingly accepted" the newspaper's unusual request for his contribution.
