Mobile Internet use is expected to surpass desktop use within the next few years. As a result, it is essential for your businesses to ensure your website can be accessed properly on mobile devices.
There are many ways to create a mobile version of your website.? You can commission a web design agency to create a website for a fee or you can use one of the many free and paid web based services? that let you create a mobile website for your business. This tutorial provides an insight into this approach and provides step by step instructions on how to create a mobile version of your website for free using a few easy steps.
We will use the following approach:
- Test how your existing site looks on mobile
- Create a free Mobile site with the help or Google recommended service
1. Check How Your Site looks on Mobile
The easiest way to do this is via Google?s free tool to test your site for mobile. It is an easy way to see exactly how your site appears to customers.
It is a great free tool that shows you how your current site looks on a smart phone, and provides a report on what?s working and what you can do better. We will use this tool simply to check if your existing site is mobile enabled without delving into details and recommendations on what you should do better.
Step by Step Instructions
a) Visit Google?s ?Test Your Mobile Site? page in your browser, enter your URL and click on the ?Test Your Site? link at the bottom left of the page. See image below.
b) The next screen will show exactly how your existing website looks on a smart phone.
You will also have the option to receive a more in-depth analysis of your mobile presence and you can choose to see further suggestions and recommendations including what you can do to improve your mobile presence. See image below.
You can look at the in-depth analysis if you want however for the purpose of this tutorial we will skip to the next tool that will allow you to create your mobile website.
2. Create Your Mobile Website
Now that you know how existing website looks on a smart phone, we will use the Google recommended Do-it-yourself Mobile Site Builder tool GinWiz to create a mobile website.
Why Did We Choose GinWiz?
I have reviewed most mobile site builder tools recommended by Google?s ?Mobile Your Site Now? initiative and have found GinWiz to be one of easiest, and particularly effective for converting your existing website into a mobile friendly version.? This was one of the aspects about this tool that stood out,
You simply enter your URL in the interactive wizard and it does the rest. Content from your existing site is automatically fetched and presented in a mobile optimised layout. You then also have the added option to edit and customise if needed.
In our case, the site creation wizard was able to seamlessly retrieve all content and functionality from our WordPress site and create a mobile version of the site with the necessary optimisation.
Step by Step Instructions
GinWiz offers two ways to create your free mobile website. You can use the Interactive Wizard or use the advanced editing option. It is very easy to switch between the two options so it does not matter if you find yourself in the wrong mode. Step by step instructions are listed below that captures the process I used to create a mobile version of our popular Internet Marketing Blog.
The easy to use interactive wizard allows you to create a mobile website in 3 easy steps.
See image below.
Enter Your URL: You simply add the URL of your existing website
Select Your Layout: You can choose from one of the template.
Publish Your Site: Your Site content will be automatically fetched into a mobile optimised version of your site.
See image below.
Advanced Editing:
If? the Wizard is not sufficient for your needs and you wish to customise your site further,? you can take advantage of the advanced editing option.? In our case, we were satisfied with the results of the wizard so there was no real need to use advanced editing.
Add More Features
The advanced editing mode gives you full control over the different elements on your site. You can also add more features to your mobile site by visiting the add-ons page. These include photo gallery, and more.
See image below.
Redirecting Your Mobile Visitors to Your Mobile Site
Now that you have a mobile version of your website ready and accessible online, you will need to set-up the necessary redirection to make sure mobile customers are automatically redirected to the mobile version of your website you have just created.
This can be done easily by copying and pasting a couple of lines of JavaScript code provided by Infogyn in the section of your main website. You only need to do this once and full information is available in your GinWiz dashboard. ?Without this, your mobile website visitors will continue to access your non-mobile enabled website and will not be diverted to your new mobile site.
Drawbacks of this Tool:
The free version of GinWiz displays an ad banner ?Powered by Infogyn? on your mobile site. Apart from this, it is a great tool to convert your existing website into a mobile friendly version. You can also use this to create a new website or campaign page.
Other Tools You Can Use:
There are several other tools that businesses can use to create a mobile website. Following are some other tools, recommended by Google, that were also reviewed for this tutorial. ?Although all of these tools offer great features, they either do not include an automated facility to fetch content from your existing website or they are only available as paid versions.
1. Google Mobile Landing Page Builder
2. GoMobi
3. Boost Communications
Conclusion:
It has become essential for businesses to make sure their website can be accessed seamlessly whether it is accessed from a desktop or a mobile phone. You can take advantage of this tutorial to create a mobile version of your website easily without prior design knowledge or experience.
