One Asiana victim killed by a vehicle, not plane crash: coroner

By Gerry Shih

SAN MATEO, California (Reuters) - A teenage passenger on the Asiana Airlines plane that crashed in San Francisco died from injuries sustained after being run over by a motor vehicle, most likely a fire truck at the scene, officials said on Friday.

Ye Mengyuan, a 16-year-old girl who sat toward the rear of Flight 214, survived the Boeing 777's crash-landing but died from blunt force injuries consistent with being run over by an emergency response vehicle, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault and San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said at a news conference.

"Obviously this is very difficult news for us," Hayes-White said. "We're heart-broken. We're in the business of saving lives."

Ye was one of three Chinese girls who died in the July 6 crash. More than half of the 307 people onboard the flight from Seoul were injured in the crash.

Hayes-White said Ye was struck by at least one specialized fire-fighting vehicle normally deployed at San Francisco International Airport, but left open the possibility that she was hit by more than one rig.

The coroner's ruling settled lingering suspicions that emergency personnel racing to douse the fiery wreckage may have inadvertently played a role in the death of one the passengers.

The announcement prompted a new set of questions over the circumstances of Ye's death and whether the first responders, who have been generally hailed for an efficient performance, could have done anything to prevent it.

It remains unclear how firefighters failed to notice Ye before she was hit, or what she did in her final minutes amidst the crash wreckage and scenes of chaos.

Fire department officials have said Ye's body was covered by a one-foot-thick (30-cm-thick) blanket of firefighting foam when she was found. Hayes-White said on Friday she did not know whether Ye was covered in the foam at the time when she was struck by the truck.

"There was a lot of debris scattered around. It was a difficult, challenging scene," she said.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTS

San Francisco police, who are still investigating the matter, have interviewed the firefighters operating the rig and given them drug and alcohol tests, Hayes-White told reporters.

The fire chief on Friday stood staunchly by her department and said she did not anticipate any disciplinary action against the firefighters involved in Ye's death, which she labeled a "tragic accident."

"It was a very volatile, dangerous situation," she said, repeatedly commending her department's performance. "In light of that, we will take a look at our protocols and procedures. There is always room for us to evaluate and improve our response."

The Chinese Consulate in San Francisco issued a statement on Friday saying it noted the effort made by U.S. agencies to "look into Mengyuan's death and disclose the truth."

"We urge the involved parties of the U.S. side to deal properly with the aftermath of Mengyuan's death and investigate and affix responsibility for this tragic accident," it said.

The San Francisco Fire Department's exposure to legal liability would be greatly diminished if the police investigation concludes that firefighter negligence did not play a role in Ye's death.

Ye was believed to have been thrown onto the runway along with another passenger when the plane's fuselage clipped the runway, airline officials and crash investigators said last week.

Firefighters racing to the scene sprayed fire-suppressing foam at the wrecked plane, which was leaking fuel and in danger of exploding. A fire that started in the right engine grew as passengers evacuated, and ultimately consumed the flight cabin.

Both the coroner and the fire chief said it also remains unknown how Ye's body ended up near the airplane if she indeed fell out of the airplane where it first struck the runway, far from where the wreckage ultimately came to rest.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said that many lives were saved by the "quick response and heroic decisions" of the city's emergency response personnel.

"This tragic accident is especially hard for them - and all of us - to endure," Lee said in a statement.

Barca coach to step down - reports

iol spt july19 Vilanova

AFP

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is to step down due to ill health, Sport, El Mundo Deportivo and other Spanish media reported.

Madrid - Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is to step down due to ill health, Spanish media reported on Friday, without identifying the source of their information.

Vilanova, 44, has been battling throat cancer for the past couple of years and spent two months having treatment in New York last season.

Barca vice president Javier Faus said he was unable to confirm the reports when contacted by telephone. A Barca spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

Club president Sandro Rosell and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta are due to hold a news conference at 1830 GMT on Friday.

Sport reported that Joan Francesc Ferrer, known as "Rubi", may be in line to take over.

Ferrer led Girona to the second division playoffs last season and was appointed Vilanova's assistant for the coming campaign to help with technical analysis of Barca's rivals.

Vilanova succeeded his close friend Pep Guardiola at the end of the 2011-12 season after Guardiola - now coach of Bayern Munich - decided to take a year out from football.

The pair, who were at Barca's academy together and coached the B side before stepping up to the first team in 2008, led the club on a spectacular four-year run including two Champions League crowns and three La Liga titles.

Last season, Vilanova helped Barca to a fourth La Liga success in five years as they equalled Real Madrid's record points haul from the previous term. ? Reuters

Coroner: Asiana Flight 214 victim killed by fire truck, not plane crash

Chinatopix via AP

Ye Mengyuan poses for photos with other classmates in eastern China's Zhejiang province in an undated photo. Mengyuan was one of three victims of the July 6 crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 in San Francisco.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

One of three teenage victims from Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was killed by a fire truck that responded to the scene ? and not from the impact of the plane crash, officials said Friday.

Ye Mengyuan, 16, survived the horrific landing and was alive when at least one specialized rig struck her on the runway at San Francisco International Airport, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said.

"Obviously, we are heartbroken. We're in the business of saving lives," said San Francisco Fire chief Joanne Hayes-White, apologizing for what she called "a tragic accident."

"It's difficult and very devastating news for all of us."

Mengyuan?s classmate and travel companion, identified by the Korean-based airline as 16-year-old Wang Linjia, was also killed in the July 6 crash. A third girl, a 15-year-old, died of her critical injuries six days later.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault says, the cause of Ye Mengyan's death was "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle."

The victims?were reportedly traveling in a group of 34 Chinese high school students and a teacher on their way to summer camp in California.

Another?180 people were injured, including two flight attendants who were ejected from a gaping hole at the back of the plane onto the runway.

Federal investigators believe the Boeing 777 came in too slow and too low and clipped the seawall on the runway as it landed. After its tail was ripped off, it spun around and eventually burst into flames.

Emergency crews sped to the runway to douse the jet in white foam and rescue passengers. Hayes-White said "every aspect" of the response is under investigation.

She said emergency workers had "risked their lives" to save people from the burning plane. "Many lives were saved on July 6," she said.

"We're really trying to support our members," she added.?"Everyone is very emotional from this incident," she said.

The fire chief said her department has reached out to Mengyuan's family through the Chinese consulate and offered to meet with them.

It's not clear how the teen ended up on the runway or why the truck did not see her. She was on the ground when she was hit by one or two trucks, the coroner said.

An autopsy determined that she died from "multiple blunt injuries that are consistent with being run over by a motor vehicle."

"Our forensic examination revealed that she was still alive when she received those injuries," he said. It's unknown if she suffered any injuries from the actual crash.

Passengers evacuate from an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft after a crash landing in San Francisco.

Although the National Transportation Safety Board will not issue a report on the cause of the crash for months, 83 survivors have taken the first step toward suing the airline and the plane's manufacturer.

Ill. man gets life term for killing family of 5

LINCOLN, Ill. (AP) ? A man convicted of beating five members of his ex-wife's family to death in their small-town Illinois home was sentenced Friday to five consecutive life sentences.

Christopher Harris, 34, was convicted in May after a monthlong trial. Harris admitted killing Dillen Constant, but claimed he did so in self-defense after discovering the 14-year-old boy slaughtering his own family. Harris reiterated his innocence on Friday when making a brief statement before being sentenced.

"I made a lot of stupid, stupid decisions that night but I did not commit this crime, and that's all I have to say," he said, according to the Peoria Journal Star, which reported that Harris spoke for about one minute.

But Judge Scott Drazewski, who before the sentencing denied Harris' motion for a new trial, not only imposed the five consecutive life sentences, but added a total of 80 years in prison for first-degree murder, armed robbery and home invasion.

Because of the charges, the only sentence that the judge could have imposed was life in prison. But there was drama in the sweltering courtroom.

"I am 7 and it still breaks my heart and I wish you were dead and my brothers and sister and Mommy and Daddy were alive," Tabitha Gee, who was 3 years old when she was beaten and survived the attack, said through a statement that was read in court, according to The (Bloomington) Pantagraph.

Harris' ex-wife, Nicole Gee, stated in a letter that was read in court that she had changed the name of Harris' son, who was born a short time before the killings, and vowed that she would never tell Harris what the boy's name is, according to the Peoria newspaper.

During the trial, Harris' own brother testified against him, describing the sickening sound as Harris pummeled his former mother-in-law and her family with a tire iron.

Ruth and Raymond "Rick" Gee and their three children were killed Sept. 21, 2009, at their home in Beason, 40 miles northeast of Springfield.

Nicole Gee, who was once married to Harris, is Rick Gee's adult daughter. She and Harris had recently reconciled, but broke up again just days before the gruesome deaths.

Harris did not dispute that he and his brother, Jason Harris, drank, smoked marijuana and used cocaine during a long night that ended with the slayings. He testified that the two went to the Gees' home to buy more marijuana.

Harris said when he walked into the house he saw 46-year-old Rick, 39-year-old Ruth and 11-year-old Austin Gee all badly hurt or dead. He said he then fought Dillen.

But Jason Harris testified that he believed they went to the family's home that night because his brother wanted to have sex with Ruth Gee's 16-year-old daughter, Justina Constant.

Jason Harris, now 25, testified that he stayed outside the house but said he heard a woman scream ? like something from "a horror film" ? and thuds like the sound of a bowling ball hitting the floor.

He said he saw his brother hit Dillen with the tire iron and that his sibling admitted he'd killed the rest of the family, saying: "I (messed) up. I killed them all."
